having some 324mm disks made up and was wondering what people thoughts were on whether to have grooved, drilled or a combination of the 2, and how many of each to have on the disk.

ive heard some say drilled disks can crack if they get too hot, too many grooves reduces the contact area on a disk, the truth is i have no idea so advice would be appreciated

thanks guys

ps -will mainly be used on motorway runs and the odd race from the lights against anything that want to, but will prob take in on a few track days if the results are good enough.

my friend had some made for a M535 track car - they did eventually crack... second ones were grooved only and have been ok... to be fair, they were abused to hell tho: it;s only ever used on the track, and typically out for 20 laps at a time. Guess it depends on what you want to use the car for (and whether you just want the holes for looks).

Oh, there was no noticeable difference between the 2...

ok cheers guys, grooved it is then, so how may grooves per disk, i had some with 20 on each disk but got the impression this was too many even though i never actually fitted them to find out

with 20 grooves on stock sized disks

correct me if im wrong but:

I think the drilled ones disperse the unwanted gases when braking and the grooved ones skim a small layer of pad each time they come in contact so both have their advantages but i suppose they both weaken the disk and reduce pad wear as a disadvantage :D

its a strange concept tho with the drilled holes causing cracking. in engineering if you have a crack in cast iron you would drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it from spreading.

So how much you looking at for a set made up in skyline size and offsett with grooves mate ;)

i think it's mainly because the holes are drilled into the blanks, so the stresses aren't relieved afterwards.

My K Sport package came with grooved disks, they have 8 grooves each :)

Show off

I have grooved discs on my Z - 10 grooves IIRC - and they are a little more aggresive than stock.....

......my SLK has drilled discs as standard and feck me can than stop!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
