Det sensor ECU harness question

I know the det sensor has been covered in numerous threads but I can't find the answer to my question anywhere.

 

I followed the instructions in this link, when checking the resistances of the ECU side connector one wire had 0.5 Mohm as it should, the other wire which should go to ground was getting nothing.

 

My question though does that wire need to be relayed all the way back to the ECU or can it just go to any ground?

EDIT: This is probably a really stupid question, but I'd rather not risk screwing anything up
