Hi all, I bought my auto 300zxTT about 6 months ago on ebay, which upto a few months ago was running OK. I noticed a noise about 3 months ago coming from the O/S of the car, which sounded like a toned down version of a kettle boiling, which came every now and them. The noise graduately got louder and sounded like it was coming from just behind the front wing & door. I checked to make sure that it was not the head gasket or any of the water system, which seems fine. I was in the process of having the car tested when she decieded to throw a wobble big time. I was on the way to work when she dropped the revs down to around 2500RPM and no more. All acceleration dispapeared although i managed to get her back home. I have spent a couple of months working on her know and have managed to get her working again although not working correctly. I am now faced with the engine running ok on high revs above 3500RPM but struggling on low revs on depressing the accelerator. Have performed an ECU test, which is pointing out a 34 code (Detonation sensor circuit?). After trawling the internet looking for info i came across a sight that informed me that there could be upto 32 reasons for the lack pickup on low revs. After reading this i am left feeling delated , which is why i have decieded to post this although long message looking for anyone who has encounted this problem or can point me in the right direction. Look forward to any help out there :mac1:

well for my money whistling kettle noise is usually turbo related...boiling bubbling noises are most likely AIV's or air locks in the coolant system....marbles rattling in a tin noises are detonation....det sensor replacement is an engine out job which is cool if you're doing the turbo replacement at the same time...or you can solder a resistor to bypass the sensor IIRC

any local member might be bribed for a pint to confirm what noise you have....

i'm too far away but cheers and welcome to the club

revs restricted to 2500 is limp home mode for the air flow meter circuit - have you got standard induction??

It may be a case of trial and error.

I think the best thing to do would be to find someone in your area as suggested above.

If you can find someone with a conzult it's even better. The ECU tests are good to point if something has failed, but the conzult will show you when something is not as it should be.

If you can get a conzult check the O2 sensors to make sure they are reading correctly.

Then if no joy found on the conzult find a friend with the a 300zx TT and start by swapping over one thing at a time and test driving.

1) the MAF (air intake sensor).

2) tps (thottle position sensor)

3) temp sensor

etc. etc.

For the power below 3500 rpm my money is on O2 sensors or air intake problem.

The whistle, well that could well be turbo related, i.e. kink in the oil feed, slight boost leak from the piping or a number of things.

Hi, I could be completely off the mark but I don't think the two faults are related,I'm sure someone else more qualified will confirm but; the first fault sounds like the EGR system the if the sound is like a coffee machine that is. SeThe second fault (code 34) is the Det sensor, these I believe are known to go wrong and I think you can bypass with a simple resistor although if you have mods I would recommend getting it replaced, a bit of a job from what I've heard.

Like I said I'm no expert and I'd get all of this confirmed but that's my 2 pence worth.

HTH

i had the problem you referred to about struggling at low revs.

changed my ptu series I to a series II and cured the problem.

Just popped home to look at any replies so far, thanks for info so far on my ongoing engine problem, The bypass resistor sounds like a good idea to over come Detonation sensor problem however engine out job fills me with grrrreat joy. If the Turbo was to die or starting to die would the boiling / rattleling noise be constaint or could it still be internitant. Since i have got the engine to run again even though running ok at high revs and hessitating and stummbling on low revs the boiling / rattling noise has disappeared?

The car has been fitted with a twin filter HKS induction kit?

can you see if the filters are still in one piece? i heard that HKS can fall apart and bits end up being sucked into the motor....2 screws 2 min job to check

hey uno

that happened to me, my hks filter started to break up and stick to the maf sensor, thus cutting power to the engine for a split second.

Firstly welcome to the nut house.

Would yoy describe the noise as a gurgling?

If so then it could be water in the AIV. Not sure of the location however.

As for the det sensor then bypasss is possibly your vest bet.

You really need the advice of one of the experts duffer, jimmer, paul and I am sure one of them will be along at some stage to help.

Good luck with it.

We want photos and we want to know which model you have as well.

Have checked induction filters all seems to be fine but will take apart and give full clean just in case.

Will check AIV when rain leaves Wiltshire?? look forward to advice from resident experts. Will attach photos when figure out how to do so still learning. Model is a 1991 TT 2+2 auto import churning out around 350 BHP.
