Did they or did they not have the Variable valve timing ?

Did the power drop to 280 for the manual in the final years?

Any help would be appreciated, would rather have the extra 20bhp.

Absolutely. I did a 500 mile round trip to get my first TT, and my slicktop was 850 miles and took 2 days

i did over a 1000 miles to get mine its worth it if you get a good one, also read all the technical advice on here so you know how the zed should be

Well, I could do with a real expert to help.

I have done around 1 years research, but theres nothing quite like having the hands on experience.

With the Rover I know every nook and cranny, and could tell a good one from a bad one straight away. I can't say the same for the Z's. Theory is never as good as practice!

One thing though...

Since its a SWB its got to be an import, I need to check the BIMTA and also find out who did the clocks and when if not in KM ?

The guy says the speedo has been changed to mph, but the odometer is in KM.

Reading 101,198.

Is this a lot of *****cks? Can the odometer NOT be changed to miles?

Cheers.

Other thing is he says that in the boot there was a Jap Satnav in the boot which some holes were drilled for in the metal floor next to the wheel !!

Is there an under layer or will these holes all the way through to the cars underside?

Seems a silly thing to do.. anyone else had the same ?

You can add a chip to the back of the dashclocks that fool the ECU in reading a lesser speed relating to MPH. So 30kph will relate to 30mph. Unfortunately, this has a knock on effect with the HICAS operation. But it'll all work, it'll just become active at a different speed.

So its true?

Cool.

Not sure about the holes in the boot... Its a Jap satnav, but who drills holes in the boot anyway? Crazy

The same people that screw side skirts and other odds and ends to their car. It's not uncommon to bold things like CD changers etc to the boot floor.

Its put me off slightly I must say.

At least it wasnt him.

Its a 63,000m (101,000Km) Silver manual SWB Targatop for £5000.

Wont take any less.

Theres no dents, just the holes in the boot and a a coupe of stone chips on the front Z panel apparantly.

Not sure about this one yet... Ive not seen a decent SWB for nearly 6 months....

You don't see that many decent Zs full stop anymore! You have any photos of it? I know photos don't always tell a lot, but would be nice to see.

the 101,198 will be part KM and Part Miles. It will be KM up until it was converted then it would of counted up in Miles. You need to find out what the mileage (or at least the date) of when it was converted to get an indication of exact mileage.

This may depend how it's done....

My '98 SWB TT has USA 160mph clocks but the odometer is still in KM (21,000 from new)

What do you guys think of the milage?

Seems less than "usual" to me.

Still, usual is a big wing, skirts, and 120,000 in the UK!

Good thing about the 96 model is that it has a different dash to the earlier models with a different odometer design. The earlier model odometer is almost comically easy to "correct" by hand whereas the 96 model has more protection from that sort of thing. All the connections on the back of the dash look the same but in fact are totally different so you can't just put an older dash on the 96 car with an adjusted mileage so I would say the mileage on the 96 car is more likely to be genuine.

Problem with this is that you can forget about after-market dash kits like the indiglo kit from working as the speedo and rev counter faces are a different shape and have different mounting points. Other problem is that the speedo electronics are different so the resistor swap trick to change your speedo (and hence all the speed sensitive devices in your car to mph) cannot be done. Instead you have to speedo converter which means that your HICAS and speed sensitive power steering will be out by a factor of 5/8. This means that if you're doing 80 the car only thinks it's doing 50 and adjusts things accordingly. Also it means that your odometer will always read high as the first 10 or so years of it's like it was reading in kms. Oh yeah, and you don't get a boost gauge.

I managed to get a older speedo, rev counter and odometer to fit with some pretty major modifications of the 96 dash which involved cutting holes in it and hacking up an older dash and glueing appropriate bits into the newer dash. Then you have to trace all the wiring and run wires from the correct points on the flexible print on the back of the dash to the correct terminals on the dials. It was a colossal headache and i would hesitate to do it again due to the danger or ruining a very rare and hard to replace 96 dash. That being said i now have a set of clocks in a 96 airbag dash which work correctly on mph and send the correct speed signal to the rest of the car. I have also adjusted my old type odometer to read the cars correct mileage. I still have the original one in case any questions are raised to prove the mileage when i swapped the gauges. I also have an indiglo dash set (which i think looks cool) and a boost gauge (which is actually semi accurate if you calibrate it yourself using the trimmers on the pcb of the boost gauge)

Good info.

Cheers for that.

Im not one to mod the dash, like to keep things OE.

If I could import a '98 unmolested model, roughly speaking would it cost a fair bit more than a car already here?

I.e Assuming I had £5K to spend, would a mint jap import command more cash?

Tbh Ive never really looked into the import thing.

Ive heard lots of stories of cars getting damaged on the way over etc.

Like I said earlier, I was ideally after a silver Slicktop TT SWB Manual, and Ive only ever seen ONE for sale in the last year.

That was one on here which had Volk Bronze alloys.

I really wanted that car, but it had been sold before I had time to blink !

Im sure it belonged/belongs to someone on here too.

What dose it matter. My MOT is in Km but I run at mph. So you are safe for the speed cameras. No big deal.

I believe he is referring to its relevance in determining the true mileage of the car.

Watch this space ;) the SWB is up for sale soon at a reasonable sum.

If only it was a year older and you would of got this dash cluster instead
