sensor guard and petrol filter

Right i was changing the air filters on my 300 and was rather shocked to find this wreckagepbpic2139919.jpg

Firstly, how on earth do you think this happened as there is no damage to the lower guard, o2 sensor or any shrapnel.

Secondly is it important?

And thirdly, can i replace it or do i have to buy the whole unit?

(for those who havn't cottened on yet its one of the mesh sceens that is at either end of the oxygen sensor unit situated between the two air filters at the front of the car.[this being the upper guard])

My second topic is that of the fuel filter. there is supposed to be a 3" long section of rubber tube within the "in" nozzle on the fuel filter, and i am wondering what its purpose is as i dont seem to have one.

thanks all, Jamie

Mine was like that too, just removed it, you don't want all that shit going up the intake tracts.

Just to point you in the correct direction, that is NOT an oxygen sensor, its a mass air flow sensor, or MAF, when you come to buy them if you order an oxygen sensor you will get somthing very very different :)

I expect if the delicate filament is okay accross the middle of the MAF you could probabyl get away with a DIY repair, perhaps ask around if anyone has a dead MAF you could nick a filter from?

Alternativly as long as its similar stuff i dont see why you couldnt make somthing out of some similar mesh.

With regard to the fuel fillter i have no idea im sorry. Never changed one on my car... ALthough i should probably do that at somepoint!

Bwahahaha too late ;)

The mesh is actually wire.

The common cause for that happening is small rust particles eat away at one of the strands, once one goes the constant pulling from the underside as the air is sucked in will eventually make a mess of it.

To be honest and as others have said, the filters or induction itself will prevent smaller particles than that mess will, so you don't really need to worry about it. I would however remove it as you don't want any more mesh sucked into your engine that you already may have.

Its not an issue, most of them are like that and Many people remove the mesh even when its in good condition anyway.

The fuel filter has a plastic pipe running through it (you slide it out of the old filer and put it in the new one) ive ran mine with and without and cant tell any difference.
