Hi there,

My car has just started squealing when accelerating hard, usually when coming out of a T junction turning right or left, then continuing down the road (in a straight line) unless I'm very gentle.

Is this wheel bearings or do you think it's the diff, please?

Thanks for your time!

I was going to say it's probably elt squeel but then ou said it's from the back.

I don't think bearings squeal, they start off as a knock and turn to a grinding sound.

Check the level of your Diff oil and check around it for any leaks. it could be many thinks so you'll have to eliminate one at a time.

Sticking pistons on the brakes causing the pads to squeel with the discs.

Worn or rusty prop

No diff oil in the rear diff

Something loose and rubbing.

If you can do it safely, put the car up on jacks and rotate the back wheels and see if you can find the source.

Maybe the heat shield is resting on the prop?

have a look underneath for anything that looks out of place.

sticky calipers/handbrake shoes.

Thanks for the replies, it's new since I had yet another second hand autobox fitted, so a few things have been taken off and put back on again during that, like the prop shaft and the exhausts, for example.

Thanks again, I'll have a look around at the weekend!

Sorry, forgot to ask - how can I check the diff oil level, please?

I'll check the brakes as well, though - cos that's a good suggestion too.

Cheers!

Hi again,

Had a gander last night, and worked out that it's not in time with the wheels.

It's more related to the revs.

I guess that eliminates brakes and wheel bearings.

Loose gearbox mount is worth a look too, I'll try to jack up the car at the weekend and wiggle a few bits to see if anything gives a clue.

I'll do a search on checking the diff oil too.

Thanks!

Mr Pink

could be exhaust related if its in synk with the revs

If it's not speed related but rev related then yes it eliminates the brakes.

Check the Drive shaft, prop's and rear diff as perviously mentioned.

If it's rpm related then that pretty much rules out anthing past the gearbox.

You sure you don't have a loose rubber gator by the gear shift stick ?

You'd be amazed at how much noice the gearbox makes. If the rubber gator around the gear stick is loose or incorrectly fitted you will get a whirring noise as you accelerate.

It's easy to refit, listen out for it next time you drive as it may be something as simple as that.
