Just out of interest for those of you with after market Gauges, can you tell me what your temp is once you have been driving for 5 - 10 mins. i.e. what temp does your guage read when it gets to a point and just sites there.

 

Also what cooling mods are you running at this temp ?

iv got an autogauge temp gauge fitted and it shows just over 70 when driving and 80 when sitting in traffic not sure this is right but there may be a cooler stat fitted it seem a bit low to me

always between 79-82 degrees (Ive got an infometer hooked up to the ECU)

Cooling Mods:

Koyo Rad & vented bonnet. I noticed the vented bonnet really helped to drop the running temps.

Ive also got some water wetter in the coolant mixture but its debateable whether that actually works or not.

Mine runs at 82 after it is fully warmed up with town driving, I have a Koyo rad and yes the water wetter defo works turboz :)

with all stock cooling at full temp I get between 80 - 84 ish

After around 5 mins as I leave work I go directly on to a dual carriageway and temp is usually just creeping past 60 odd

Hmm, ok from the feedback so far I think I'm running a little on the hot side.

 

My stock gauge sits just below half, however my aftermarket gauge sits at 210 F which is about 98.8 C, once she is warmed up. Now this is a little worrying since I'm still running her in at under 3k rpm.

 

I have a howe rad, aftermarket oil cooler, SS slam pannel, electric fan (which is currently wired up to ignition live so comes on when the ignition is on), also have the under plenum by pass mod.

 

I'll check tonight whether she's got a small air lock but I think I've got all the air out since my matrix pipes decided to drop all the coolant over tesco car park.

 

Do new engines tend to run a little hotter or have I got a problem with either the gauge/sensor/engine or cooling system ?.

I suppose that is a possibility as everything is so much tighter but I'm guessing here. 98.8 is rather hot though.

84 deg C, according to the ECU (not the dash gauge) with all standard rad etc.

 

On a long thrash back from Le Mans it was touching 100 deg, but it was a seriously hot day.

Definately too hot and your electric sub fan should be kicking in to cool things down at that temp.

You have the exact same set up as me then. My sub fan did not have a relay in it, I'll have to plug one in, although I'm not sure it should be getting this hot anyway at under 3k rpm.

No unfortunately my cable stopped working (couldn't not find ECU) just before the car went off the road for a rebuild and I completely forgot about it until now. I'm sending it back to DTA to check but I think he is away this week so won't have anything back for a good few weeks I would imagine.

 

Can I splice into a wire from ECU to get a reading on my after market gauge rather than the sensor ? or does it not work like that ?

I'm wondering if the sensor.

This is where a good quality after market guage is essential and is worth its weight in gold.

Mine runs around 82 open it up to full boost around 30psi and the temp increases to 95,then when you ease off the boost in less than a min it sits back at 82 the stock temp guage does not even move 1mm when all this takes place.

That's the problem I guess, I thought I had a good gauge, are autometer gauges no good ?

Yes they are its what I have used for years.Not saying it could be faulty though.

ok I guess the first thing to do is get a conzult rigged up and comapre the temp's between the ECU and the gauge.

 

I'll have to wait until I get my lead back unless anyone close fancies a visit sometime next week ? :)

if your sensor is in the top hose ,boil a kettle remove sensor and dip if it reads more than 100 you will know its guage/sensor related mate

Actually you've just given me an idea.

Thinking about boiling the kettle and putting the gauge in will probably give me an incorrect reading because the sensor should really be earthed seperatly from the gauge. According to the fitting instructions you shouldn't use any silicone sealant on the thread as this may give an incorrect reading due to earthing propeties. Therefore putting it in a bowl of water form the kettle will probably give even more of an inaccurate reading.

Which gets me thinking.... the sensor is plumbed into an ali water sensor adapter, but this adapter sits between two silicone pipes which sit between the top feed form the rad and the SS top water pipe to the engine. Therefore even if I don't use any silicone/red or anything else it's still notgoing to be a great earth is it ?.

 

Maybe I should run an earth wire from the sensor to ground on the plenumn ?.,

It's never been plumbed in and has been sitting for years in it's original packaging. It's still nice and shiny like new, only plumbed it in on Sunday morning.

Yep you MUST fit a decent earth! Is the sensor body brass? If so just solder a wire on and run it to a good earthing point :)

Yes, the sensor is brass.

 

It's a screw in type which does not have a connector on the end of it. Instead it has a screw thread where you would either just wrap the wire around or use a round/hoop connector and secure with a bolt.

 

Could I just run an earth on the same connector as the sensor ?, I mean the whole sensor is brass, they would effectively be connected to the same thing anyway ?.

I soldered an earth wire directly to the sender ;)
