can someone also tell me about the coolant tank (passenger-side front corner) as ive heard this is supposed to collect condensation and return it to the coolant system (or something) and doesnt work very well.

In theory the overflow dipstick should read at the low level on a cold engine and higher up it when the engine is hot, but as long as its somewhere in between it should be fine. Might be worth whipping the bottle off to make sure it isnt blocked up with sludge or something at the bottom..

As for topping up whenever i change my coolant i fill to the top of the rad at cold and make sure the overflow bottle is about half way up the dip stick.

Dave your only down the road so you can always pop in the shop if your passing this way, two heads might be better than one.

thanks for that mate. i have a feeling i may be overfilling it (if theres no coolant below the bend at the top of the Koyo then i top it up) so im not going to touch it now and see how it goes, albeit carry a bottle-full of coolant with me! :p i may pop over some time if i still cant get it sorted, lol!

This too is correct, I am being dumb on this subject. I will get my coat.

The overflow tank doesnt need to be sealed as the point that it dumps and draws from is near the bottom of the tank therefor no pressure is needed in it.

Almost none. Had the coolant replaced when the engine was rebuilt a few years ago. It's down slightly on the rad cap, but you can still see it. Going to do a complete flush out anyway soon as I'll be doing a service on it shortly in readiness for some nice summer driving.

I think I jinx'd myself by voting never had to top it up. I just lost the lot of it in tesco car park once I turned the ignition off. Not sure what the cause is yet, but it's looking lik e a hose to drivers side turbo or heater matrix, Can't see that much water coming out of the head gasket if it only did it once the engine was off.

hmm this is weird. over the last 3 weeks or so (touch wood), its not lost a drop!?!? since it was drained and filled, it used about a pint of coolant over a fortnight or so. now its not moving at all! maybe there was some trapped air after all...

Hey Dave,

Could you have had cheap antifreeze in the car before your recent drain and refill?

Anything slightly alcohol based would simply evaporate when it gets hot.....

Richard:confused:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

hey mate. i used halfrauds antifreeze so id expect it to be half decent (only half decent mind ;) ) - where would the evaporation go though? i thought it was a completely sealed system?
