This may be a silly question.

Took my SWB Z to a garage for new bridgestones all round. After taking all the wheels off they told me that one of the rods was bent underneath the car throwing out my tracking but not to worry since they had straightened it.

new wheels back on - only issue was they could not fit the (cosmetic) centre cap on the rear wheel of my super advans for some reason. Anyway I drove off - no problems till hitting 60 mph when i am now getting juddering through the steering wheel.

The car is sitting out on the drive - Im obviuously keen to take it back but am nervous about driving it there - what the f*ck have they done> any ideas chaps?

Could do with knowing exactly which rod it was.

Front tension rod?

It's the only rod you'd call a rod? LOL and if it's the front you'd really notice a problem through the steering wheel.

Easy enough to check it's got all the bolts back in and tight if you jack the front end up.

If it comes loose it could be nasty so be careful.

Wouldn't think a bent track rod would give you a judder/wobble.

Check the wheel bolts are tight for a start as it could be something stupid as that.

Perhaps you threw a balance weight soon after leaving? Maybe the bolts? maybe something trapped behind the wheel forcing it to sit at a funny angle?... take it back and tell them to sort it out!

If you had a bent rod before you took the car in you would have noticed through driving it.

My guess is they bent it trying to get a jack under the car or the car fell off the jack and bent it, they then straightened it to cover up by putting new marks on it thereby covering up the fresh mark caused when they bent it.

Just a theory....

i agree! :p

it sounds like the wheels have been static balanced instead of dynamically balanced, i.e. the lazy way. some of the tyre fitters where I work do it because basically they cant be ****ed to do it properly.

static balancing is adding weight to the lightest part of the wheel so there is no up or down vibration but this technique doesnt balance the side to side vibration

dynamic balancing is balancing both sides of the wheel which can be a faff on as you have to use stick on weights so you have to clean the area the weight needs to stick to, whoever has fitted the tyres couldnt be bothered to do this so has hammered a load of weights on the inside edge of the rim where they cant be seen.

workin two jobs now to pay for work being done to me house and engine rebuild so dont have much time to meself at the minute, will all be worth it in the end though :D

You have checked the wheels are torqued up? You wouldn't be the first with loose wheels.

Thats a good point, however ususally you would feel a loose wheel before 60mph :)

sounds stupid but caribzx had a wheel bearing done at a well known garage down our end, drove away and juddering went round checking wheels, wheel not tightened up only just hand tight! torqued up no more probs.

Thanks chaps!

Got it back today - a 40gm weight had worked itself off the drivers front wheel - replaced and now all sorted!

I would just like to add,if 'a rod' was bent i.e. track rod,tie rod whatever,it should be replaced,not straightened-the fookin' numpty's!!:slap:;)
