Lots of nice Z pics on the site. How about a ' looks like shit, does lots of odd things, makes some weird noises, handles a bit odd but gets me from A-Z o.k.' thread. Cars must be MOT,d and used on a regular basis.

I'll start, pics tomorrow if anyones interested,

dented front wings

rusty rear arches

paintwork crap

filthy engine bay

interior bits missing

brake dust ingrained wheels

no heater

iffy handbrake cable

big clunks as gears are engaged

autobox with a mind of it's own

not been washed far less polished for last umpteen years.

still goes great, used daily

Well anyone else?

lol you just described a saxo

Yup.

Sounds like my new tt lwb toy, scratches, dents, big holes in the rear seats for non-existent speakers, scuffed wheels.........oh yes+ the most gorgeous sounding twin kakimoto pie booming out the back.

Just good fun to drive, while i bring it up to spec

I've NEVER understood the 'rat-look'...or rather aspiring to have a car that looks like a shed! Why would you possibly want to drive around in something that looks more at home in a breakers yard? Something like the Z gets respect when it's powerful and clean. I've lost track with the amount of people who said that most Z32s they see are utter shit boxes. I don't know why you want to add to that populous.

The whole rat-look comes from the dub scene and it's not liked particularly by the majority of enthusiasts.

Don't know what the 'dub' scene is. I'd like to have a super clean, concourse car but I use the Z daily, it's never had any work done in a garage, I do all the maintenance and repairs myself. I'd rather spend a weekend, replacing brake pads, oil, plugs, bearings than polishing and painting. No way I'm going to spend 1000's on resprays, refurbs, or dodgy mods carried out by so called experts(show me an expert that knows more than than the Nissan design team?) on a car that's worth f'all anyway.

I've always loved Z's since I owned a 280ZX,love Japanese engineering, contrary to popular belief the 300ZX isn't hard to work on or unreliable.

A standard ,unmodified , decently maintained 300ZX is a realistic daily runner and will keep it's value relatively in the future (it can't go much lower than £1000).

"It might be dirty but it's mine."

Made the original post 'cause I had been pretty pissed off with the motor after driving it all winter with no heater, then getting a grinding noise from the rear, had a look, saw the handbrake was sticking, had a fiddle, took it out for a drive, windows down. listening for grinding noise, bit of straight road, booted it, and it went mental, screaming through the home made exhaust with no boxes (forget the aftermarket boxes, just take them off and get straight thru 2.5" pipe).

Looks like shit went like fook.

It's dirty but it's mine.

mines dirty, must wash it tomoro even thoought it cant go anywhere.

but give it time and it will go, where I want, very very quickly.

show you an expert that knows more than a nissan design team. err ok, but if you whre to say any engineer team I would be hard pushed. But lets face it Nissan dont make pretty cars on the whole and even teh Z isnt everyone cuppa.

It's worth what you put into it.

A rusty old heap might be worth **** all but a well looked after example is obviously worth far more.

I never put money into my car as an investment I did it because I wanted it to look this way and because there's very little else could give me such massive performance for the money.

You've obviously never driven a well modified example as they are two totally different cars.

Things have advanced a lot in nearly 20 years since the Z was first released and "so called experts" know a lot more and have a lot more to work with than they did back then.

Nissan had to work to emission laws and create a car that the average owner could handle and afford to run.

Some of us want a performance car thats the best it can be and that can compete with modern cars worth 10 times the price :)

Why on earth would you want to drive around in a 3 litre battered old example of a stunning sports car?

You might as well get a rusty old micra and save on running costs if looks aren't important.

I'm pretty sure most people are on this site because they have a lot of love and pride in their car and if they don't I wonder why they would bother coming here?

I am working towards getting mine tip-top again, although i have toyed with the idea of a professionally sprayed flat matt black zed.....

Two thumbs down. You loose body definition with shineless paint.

I actually like that though :D LOL

I do love the VW, must of been a lot of work to get it to look like that! Lol

That's what I don't get, people spending hours in order to make their car look like ass.

Suppose it depends what your prception of ass is.

Ive spent years looking for a standard mk1 astra gte, but trying to find one which hasnt been "done up" is almost impossible.

Ill keep looking cos one will turn up eventually.

I prefer my daily drives to be rat look because i don't have to worry about someone hitting it with thier door or rubbing it when parking by it.

Ditto, i have a very ratty J plate proton!!

I've unfortunately seen plenty of "Rat" Z's :( Abused cars owned over the years by people who should'nt be owning them and they are part of the reason the general 300zx value is so low....at least they are slowly dissapearing to the graveyards.

I can remember seeing a matt black Z and thought it looked awesome. BUT its an acquired taste and best left to older, ropier cars lol :D

Edit:

Just come across these pictures of a 'Rat 200sx'... IMO it looks ace (not the exhaust though!)

To me, that just looks like a tatty heap. It's covered in cable ties. I'd be ashamed to be seen in that, let alone drive it regardless of what it had under the bonnet.

What a heap of shit

I suppose if you can't be arsed keeping a car in good nick, you could do that instead  Personally my car is far from perfect, but i would never let it develop into something like that. I suppose hippys might find it cool

It's not that, some of the Ratters actually purposfully go out of their way to make it look like a heap of shit. Yes, they'll rub down the paint, leave it to scab over and then lacquer over it!
