mine is also smaller than a standard plate on the front rich, but made sure it was legal. they wouldnt put their postcode on the plate otherwise & wanted me to sign a disclaimer. not worth the hassle. i wanted black with silver digits . hows it coming on by the way ?

they are as keen as mustard on it round these parts, i got done too! but mine was showing through the windscreen and i got a rectification notice, I think thats what its called!!

I think the one i have now on the front is a bike plate. Its just a shame that as society is today, that time and paperwork is made over something so trivail!!

the dopey twazzacks that pulled me had to ask what car it was to fill the bloody form in, they thought it was made by "fairladyz" and still put " Nissan 200sx" I think they only pulled me to quiz me about what it was!!

Give them credit though, they did let me off a fine and at first the seargeant was nasty, but by the end of it though we were having a good laugh in the police landrover!

So.... did you swallow????

Mine's a bike sized plate. Been lucky so far. I am expecting it to be found out though, although the amount of times I've driven past police cars etc and they've never done anything over it. I've not been pulled over in nearly 8 years.

whats with all the bike sized plates?

when was the last time you saw a bike with a front plate!!

Ok heres a nice bit of law for you, you only have to display a reg plate with the britsh standard on it if your car is 2003 or newer.

Older vehicles simply have display an approved typeface, being New Charles Wright for all vehicles 2001 on and the standard typeface before that.

Apparently import vehicles are allowed to display a slightly different size plate if that is all the vehicle will allow due to its design.

The best bit is ALL registration offences are non endorsable, fixed £30 max and no points.

The dvla have the right to retract cherished plates if you abuse the law but ive never heard of them actually doing it.

'Bike sized', it doesn't say anything about orientation (ie front or rear).

Thanks for the other info.

God forbid, should ANPR miss one plate. Most people who fit smaller plates are usually insured and can afford to tax their vehicles. If we were still an exporting nation with some industry left, and not one that opens our borders for cheap foreign labour, then there would be no need for the government, and ultimately the police, to have to scrape the bottom of the barrel like this. I blame the government of the 1980's. They sold off all that our forefathers ever worked for and gave huge tax breaks to top earners, who then spent their money on foreign goods and didn't plough any of it back into the country as the government had expected. Damn - I need a holiday:D

What If You Have A Body Kit With New Bumpers Etc?

What If You Have A Body Kit With New Bumpers Etc?

same goes for those. i suppose at the end of the day, you fit which you think will look best. obviously you cant fit a standard uk plate on the rear of an import, and an import plate (square plate) would look stupid on a uk bumper.

what i mean is if your car is an import but you have replaced the orignal bumper could you stiull use "my cars an import, so the rules dont apply" excuse?

yes, you can still use import plates even after changing your bumpers :D

I think the law is that special sized plates can be used on imports where standard sized won't fit. So if you fit a bumper that can take a standard sized plate or even a stock front end like mine, then you have to fit a standard sized number plate.

si. i actually ask that very question when i had my plates done. they told me i could have import sized plates front & rear with import sized characters, even though my back bumper will take standard uk one.

You can not have smaller size plates on imports if the standard size UK will fit. The fact it is an import makes no difference in the eyes of the law !!

3/4 size plates are not legal - I know this to my cost !! :x:

You need to have:

Character Height 79mm

Character Width 50mm

Letter l or 1 14mm

Space between characters 11mm

Space between groups 33mm

Top, bottom and side margins 11mm

Space between vertical lines 19mm

Special Concession for Owners of Imported Vehicles

A concession which will permit some vehicles to continue to display motorcycle size number plates was announced on July 31st 2001 by Minister for Transport John Spellar. This will apply to certain imported cars, mainly from America and the Far East. It follows concerns about the cost of modifying vehicles which are designed for foreign markets and unable to display UK size number plates.

Minister for Transport John Spellar. said

"The introduction of this concession demonstrates that the Government listens and responds to the concerns of motorists.

"We have taken into account the views of enthusiasts, vehicle importers and the police. We have been assured that law enforcement agencies will be able to recognise and record the smaller character size.

"We are clear that the cost of modifying some of these vehicles, in particular those which originate from the USA, to take standard size plates would be costly and unfair. We intend therefore to allow them to display motorcycle size number plates."

Harry Tune, Chairman of the American Auto Club UK, welcomed the announcement:

"This really is a milestone in the history of the American car enthusiast in Britain. We so appreciate that a Government department has listened to us and been sympathetic to our needs.

"Over 90% of American cars, whether classic or modern, are manufactured with a motorcycle size number plate indent so this concession will benefit thousands of enthusiasts.

"I am absolutely delighted at today's news."

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency will commence a short consultation exercise prior to amendment of the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.

i could fit a normal uk plate on the front of mine, but legally i could have had an import plate for front & rear, which the plates are physically smaller & the characters are smaller, so i think youve been done. the characters for import plates are as below, taken direct from the dvla website.

plates Specifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)

Character Height - 64mm

Character Width - 44mm

Character Stroke - 10mm

Space between characters - 10mm

The bold bit stuffs you fella. Cos you CAN fit UK plates.
