and am interested to see that a series VI Zed has CLEAR rear lights, and that's BOTH sets of lights...the indicator lights AND the brake lights.

Does anybody know where I could get my sticky fingers on a set of these?

Featured Replies

Its incorrect. Series 6 = 99spec. Its not a great pic, but they are just regular 99spec lights. Red brakes. Clear indicators.

yeah i think its 99 spec too...

tho about a yr ago i saw sum1 on ebay selling some with both brake and indicator clear with LED lights that looked cool...

but they never appeared on ebay again!

Mine are both clear but were custom made I do believe. You can see them in my sig or rides. They are LED and a purchase off ebay.

Not sure where else you can get them, perhaps Z1 do them.

I have just sent an email to the webmaster of the site asking for clarification, I will post the reply here.

Wow, I wasn't expecting such a quick reply, but this is what 'Andy' says:-

"Hi Dave,

That page is a direct translation from a Japanese site. I can't guarantee that it is 100% accurate. However, in the photo it certainly looks that both are intended to be clear, although it is more obvious that it's possible to tell that the brake light is red.

I've not seen a 98/99 spec car in the flesh so to speak, so can't verify personally.

Not sure this helps much - sorry.

Andy"

Has anyone here "seen a 98/99 spec car in the flesh"?

these are 99 spec lights

I must say both lenses look clear to me, with the red of the bulbs showing through them.

What do others think?

:rofl:Don't be a plonker lol , of course they'll be red when they're lit up......else they wouldn't be legal:D

i thought that 300zx.org is andyp's site from here. i would have thought he would know 99 spec or not.

Well if it is Andyp's site, you can see from his answer that he is not sure which is correct. I've been looking around worldwide ebay sites to try and find some 99 spec rear lights for sale but haven't had any luck so far (there's no Japanese ebay site, unfortunately)

In what country(ies) were the 99's sold?

you can buy 99 spec from either dta, smithys or the z centre.

i purchased mine off of smithy's. but they are clear indicators and red brake . the clear ones for the brake are customs. or can be purchased inc the led conversion from clearcorners.net

A lot of Andy's website content is taken from numerous sources around the world and this one in particular he makes clear is from a Jap website.

Like anyone else would, you can assume the pic is of a genuine 99 spec, but again as he say's, he's not seen one in the flesh, so in short he would not know either way 100%. I would very much doubt more than a handful of peeps on this forum have seen 99 specs in "the flesh" being so rare.

If clear brake light section is your thing, the only company that could do it possibly ( correctly ) is http://www.clearcorners.com/products/nissan/300zx2/

smithy

I can assure you that the 99 spec rear lights were ONLY available (OEM) in the Brake = Red with Indicator = Clear.

This photo was taken by myself of the only genuine 99 spec that I've seen, and looks like clear/clear, but is defo clear/red. It's the way that the light catches the red inner lens, and ONLY shows up this way on the 99 specs, so maybe Nissan altered the way they produced the red lens for this version?!

HTH Dave,

Dave :D

so maybe Nissan altered the way they produced the red lens for this version?!

I think that the red is slightly lighter, but you have to remember that Nissan fitted chromed bezels inside the unit which reflect light back out giving the impression of a lighter and brighter light....which is why the difference between fake-specs and 99-specs is so strong.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Dave. Your mention of 'the red inner lens' Prompted me to have a look at my standard lights and, to my surprise (shows you what a twit I am) I saw that the orange and red lights are fronted by the clear plastic cover.

I had not realised the lights were contructed that way (I know, I've already said I'm a twit) but now all is clear (excuse the pun) and the mystery is solved......at least for me.

The next question is, would it not be possible to convert the red brake lens in the same way that the orange indicator lens has been changed to 'clear' by a fair number of members?

If so, are there RED chromed bulbs available similar to the orange ones already used?

Dave,

Not sure about red/chrome bulbs, but you could aways convert to all LED's instead!! :D (that's the same as the Clearcorners.com ones) This is my intention for the rears, but I'll be converting a set of genuine 99 specs :shook: and keeping the red lens.

Also if you did convert to clear lenses, consider spraying the reflector chrome or silver, as it comes in a 'half-hearted' white spray from the factory, so you'll want as much reflection as you can get (not a problem with LED's though)

All the best,

Dave

Yes it is possible ,there are a few zeds over here with them, but imo,why fck around with the 99 spec lights anyway, they are a great design and look good in the first place ???

It's just that I am aiming for a totally 'colourless' look to my silver Zed. I started with the front and side indicators, using clear lenses and chrome bulbs. My next step is to replace the red rear side reflectors with clear white lights......I believe they are available in the States but I've been unable to track them down yet.

That would just leave the rear lights and, whilst I originally planned to modify my existing lights by just replacing the orange lens with clear (like the 99 spec) as several members have already done, I thought 'why not go the whole hog and replace the red lenses as well'. That would just leave the red rear reflectors which are a legal requirement anyway.
