I have had my auto for 4 years now and have been really happy with it. It is one of the smoothest autos I have driven and to date have had no problems with it (touch wood). I am aware that the majority of the forum favour the manual 300zx over the auto, but what I would like to know is: Does anyone that has done the conversion regretted changing ?

Featured Replies

Just done a manual conversion on mine and havent looked back, and would do it again too without a doubt. :D:D My auto box was capput though.

yeah - that's my concern - if my autobox had died I would convert, but it is fine.....so is it a question of "if it ain't broke..."

but what I would like to know is: Does anyone that has done the conversion regretted changing ?

Yes me,Its not just because I have broken a brand new gearbox that only managed to cover 1000 miles:rant: its just a horrid gearbox IMHO and the quicker I find a replacement then the better.

I've assisted SWZ with quite a number of Manual conversions, and the response from the owners after the conversion is always the same.

They are always surprised at how much of a difference it makes - How much quicker and responsive it is and how they wish they had done it earlier !

One of the benefits of doing the conversion when your autobox is fine is that you can sell the autobox to recoup some of the conversion costs.

i knew it wouldnt take Mac that long to pipe up on this topic. Its abit close to his heart, bless his cottons

I've driven a few manual's. Did not feel that much difference (also due to the turbo difference) between the auto and manual other than you have alot more control with the manual and no chance the the gearbox dropping down a gear just as you approach that bend and put your foot down a bit in the wet Lol.I did the next best thing! fitted an na diff and kept the auto! I just switch the auto to hold when in the wet and approaching bends.

You gain control with a manual. You need engine braking...something a stock auto doesn't have.

Good point as auto's only have the engine braking facility in manual selection of 1 and 2 unlike manuals which have it in every gear.

its really some thing you need to decide on your own though! Drive both and see how you feel. But you need to drive the manual in different driving conditions to get the real experience and compare them.Or you could consider an Na diff conversion at the cost of loosing the rear hicas. There is still one for sale on here I believe .:) This will make your auto alot quicker if thats what your looking for.

I love my auto, its the quickest and smoothest auto i've used, however when i can afford it, i'll be converting to manual. My dad's n/a is a manual and i Love driving that, so mine would be incredible as a manual.

yes .

Is that yes you regret it?

I had mine done i love driving it "out and about" but on the motorway the auto was brilliant, bad for fuel consumption but brilliant for kicking down and roaring past stuff...

I could do the same with the manual but im too lazy. Not that it struggles to pick up speed, but the thrill of doing 80 to 130 in 3rd was just awesome :D

But i wouldnt go back - although i would buy another auto TT to accompany my manual.. LOL

Is that because you have loads of power ?

That is a very good point David.

Well its probably why it gave up but in all honesty with all the bullshit you read on how much a stock box can take I would have expected a few more miles from it:rolleyes: However the z box is just a nasty piece of crap IMHO and I have driven a few.

Alot tt diff is 3.69 and na diff is close to 4.1 (4.08) There is a weight saving issue too! Some say the na diff is not as strong as the TT diff. Although this may be true there has not been and na diff destroyed power handling wise in a TT car to this date:cool:

Na diff swap involves a whole subframe swap inc brakes (except calipers) and rear half of propshaft.

Or you could change the ring and pinion in your TT diff by fitting either a leader gears one or a richmond gear ring and pinion.

Ian what is the best manual gearbox in your opinion or experience? (does not have to be nissan) :)

I hoping to overhaul my gearbox in the near future with 99 spec internals as ive read they are a big improvement from the old in reliability/syncro's/bearings etc The old boxes are flawed and are just not up to scratch... i still love em tho :D

Would'nt say flawed....syncro issues are still very rare...and lets not forget they are 15yrs old now, most other cars have same problems.... Only change if your having current problems, probably cheaper just to buy a new gearbox than rebuild though.
