I am thinking about buying a set of 18" alloys and have seen a set I like but, like all new alloys (I think) they are all the same width, in this case '8J'.

 

What effect will this have on driving the Zed?

 

What are the widths of the standard Zed UK wheels?

 

Is it possible to buy new alloys with rears wider than fronts?

 

The ones I have seen are 'BSA 359' (I really like the style and the price is good), does anyone know if they are any good?

 

Got any other comments or advice?

can I add to this thread how critical is the offset is it gonna damage tyres/suspension if its not as stock +35

The most important thing to get right is the offset. Getting wider rears is NOWHERE near as important as that! With 8Js you could actually fit 235 on the front and 265 on the back with no worries - my own car is the same and it handles better than ANY Z I have driven :)

BSA are ok. Quite a cheap brand. Just a basic cast monoblock. Not bad though and the 359 is quite a decent looking rim. Dont' expect the finish to be as long lasting as more expensive wheels.

 

8J is quite narrow for the Z if you're going aftermarket especially on the rear. You can specify a wider rim but you may not get their 'special' deals if you go through that route. Would suggest 8.5" up front and 9.5 - 10" at the rear. Staggered dish makes the car look far more aggressive.

 

You need to watch the offset though, get that wrong and you'll have all sorts of problems.

so if the outside line of tyres being in stock position is the way to go? and if you go for wider wheels keep the extra width on the inside rather than outside of the car?

Doesn't work like that really. It's the relation the hub has to the centreline of the wheel.

i'll bugger of and start my own then :D

I had new 8.5 J's on the front and 9.5 J's on the rear of my beemer (M Sport set up???) and thats with a standard offset. (if that helps?) and the ride is now quite twitchy and it white lines a lot more, The tyre wear is not effected and they look the Dogs B's. the tyres fitted are 225 x 18 and 255 x 18. more or less the same size as I had on my 300zx. 235 x 18 and 265 x 18 but the rims widths were the same.

Sorry Andy, no offence intended.....your post was gratefully received together with it's advice. It just got buried in the avalanche of posts from 8ace piggybacking my thread. Not saying he's not entitled, it's a free world after all, but it was distracting from the answers to my questions.

Wheels aint simple lol. First thing, choose your width, secondly and MOST IMPORTANTLY get your offset right! Offset affects handling/grip/tyre wear the list goes on....

Standard UK wheels are 7.5 front and 8.5 rear

Not sure on stock offsest, around -35 . Stock wheels sit too far into the arches anyway, ideally you want to alter the offset to push them out towards the arches, but if you go too far they will rub.

What about the 'Fuel 5' wheels? They are of similar design to the BSA 359's but are supplied as 8.5J fronts and 9.5J rears. With fitted tyres, they are £700 compared with the BSA's £530!!! Would the price difference be worth it?

 

Pictures below are 1) BSA 359's x 4 2) Fuel 5's x 1 .......... I like the spokes on the BSA's best but the spec of the Fuel's are obviously better with the wider rears etc.

is the offset 35 or -35 on the wheels you bought ? wouldn't -35 push them way out past the arches as stock offset is postive 35 isn't it?

Not sure whether it's - or + but they are specifically for my '95 Zed so should be ok.

 

I'd love to see them on a silver Zed........can anyone do this for me by changing the black attachment to silver?

OK, the new wheels are on their way BUT........have I been too hasty?

 

They are sold 'for the 300zx' but the spec says 'offset 35' and I believe our standard wheel is offset minus35!

 

I have emailed DP-Motorsport to clarify whether the Fuel's offset is positive or negative and am waiting for their reply. :confused:

 

If (as I hope) the new wheels are the same offset as the Zed's standard wheel, the new front wheels will intrude 1/2" further into the well and protrude 1/2" further out. The rear wheels will intrude 1" further into the well and protrude 1" further out....(that's based on the original jap wheels that were fitted to my Zed.)

 

Is this likely to pose any problems with 'rubbing' any parts of the Zed?
