Contemplating replacing inner and outer sills,Both sides plus intrenal reinforcement panels. In addition to this I am concidering a new floor pan. I would like to ask if there is a prefered sequence of events? IE Floor first sills second? or vice versa. Any other advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance. Redwine300:shock::(:(

Dude, just get another shell! You can find good shells for next to nothing.

ask slickpete, i'm sure he's got a rollin shell up for grabs

Ditto- the value of a Z is so low that major welding would render most of them scrap. As has been said- there have been shells on her for next to nothing or free!

Yep, you;ll get Rolling LWB shells for next to nothing and even SWB shells from about £500

im just in the middle of doing new sills , inner and outer , once done its solid again but if i was to get a rolling shell iwould have engine upholstery , everything to change ,, seems like a much bigger job

Yes, but redwine300 is talking about replcing the entire floorpan.

Funkysi, I totally agree with you, However I have been around this car for 13 out of it's 16 years and I suppose you could say I am a little too attatched and would like to keep it as original as possible.(sad i know) but thank's. Who knows, things might go t*ts up!!? :duffer:

Snowygt, Thank's for the slick pete recommendation.

Guinnal, Legrath. Again, Thank's for your input. Heart's ruling the head i'm afraid

Magnum5, Tempted to take a look, I will give it some serious thought and let you know.

Good on you Redwine for trying to save the car, as others rightly point out it would probably be easier to re-shell, but then it's going to be a different car, and if you want the car for sentimental reasons then the reshell aint the way to go.

Regards fitting a floor pan I would say that it would be easier to start with that then do the sill reinforcment and sills, but do you really need to replace the floor as

A. its going to be a Nissan part only therefore really expensive.

B. thats a major job, a lot of work and skill required.

Cant you just repair the sections that need doing.

Ive nearly finished my welding, only a couple of little bits to do before i start undersealing and putting it all back together. I'll try and get some more pic's to you of the work i had to do.

I second that, know exactly how you feel, did you get the page add. for floor sections on the courtesy site i p.m`d you?

IMO. you need to stand back from your emotions and carefully examine every square inch of your shell.

if your outer and inner sills need replacing then there is also the third inside reinforcing panel which will be rotten too. If you are even half thinking the floors need repacing then consider the fact that all your hidden box section structures will be even worse inside. Ie your chassis rails and the front rad support panel, also the inner lower rear arch sections. inside the double skinned rear arches. also inside the tailgate and doors. The 300ZX shell is extremely complex and no matter how much rust you cut out there will still be areas left, especially in triple seam areas etc. This will resurface to haunt you in the future without doubt. Also if your shell is as bad as you say then all your suspension members may well be corroded too.

Going back to my original area of expertise the 240Z there is now no way that rusty UK 240Zs can successfully be restored. The only way forward is using virtually rust free Californian import shells and treansfering all the stuff over. I believe we are fast approaching this situation with many UK registered 300ZXs, and in this case the source of rust free shells is from Japan .

i have a virtually immaculate Series 2 NA Man 2+2 whose future is in some doubt. You are welcome to have a look at it to see for yourself just how rust free these recent Jap imports really are. Im not really bothered about selling it as a rolling shell as I have an engine to replace the faulty one it came with but Im always open to offers.

I have attached a couple of pics

Hi quinnal,

I know you are right but I can't scrap her out without at least trying.

Hello Again Santa,

Have finally heard from Courtesy Nissan, They have confirmed they have the parts but I am having trouble trying to find out about any additional charges. Import tax, VAT, etc' I need to get a total price. Any ideas?:)

Slick pete. Well what can I say! Firstly many thanks for the frank and informative reply, I appreciate your detailed and candid comments. However, My feelings for the car are such that I should at least try to retain the original shell and attempt the repair. Maybe if I see for myself the extent of the rust then maybe sense will prevail?? I suppose I have never been very good at taking sound addvice. That said you did piont out a few areas for me to bear in mind that I had not concidered. Thanks Again:eek:

If it`s courtesy add on roughly 22% that should cover del n import fees but it can vary ,if you do a search on here it`s been discussed a fair bit .p.s you have pm regarding your panel order..it`s all done n waiting. All the best.

Most anything can be welded up if you have the patience time and the desire, if you feel its worth the end result then get on with it, do be aware though that you will come across rust in places you didn't think existed

Have a look through the following thread on sxoc I,m sure your zed wont be any where near as bad but it may give you some inspiration, or put you off lol

http://www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=285498&highlight=rusty+legs

I know how you feel mate. I've welded many of prized motors and I was about to do the same to my own Z a Jap S2 TT- until I started looking at re-shelling. I found that the shells were either v-cheap or free.

As I got into the idea, I realised that z's in general are cheap- though not free yet. i picked up a TT SWB hardtop, running but with no compression on one cyl (and more importantly-no rust!)for £500. That has helped me overcome any emotions I had about not repairing my original car!

I thought mine had rust problems, but its nothing compared to the sxoc link.

I am considering buying a shell in the future to make one good car.

Never had a go at welding and think I would get more enjoyment from making one decent car from two donors.

Its difficult to reshell, without tools, equipment, lots + lots of space, mates with understanding wives +a patient one of your own.Worth it to get away from rust for years though
