Wednesday 12th March£5 GALLON MILESTONE REACHED

Service station now forcing drivers to pay £5 a gallon

The price of petrol has hit £5 a gallon at a motorway service station for the first time, it as been reported.

It is understood that a service station on the M40 reached the milestone after selling petrol at 110.9p for a litre of unleaded, over the 110p threshold for a £5 gallon.

Although fuel has reached £5 before in smaller petrol stations this is the first time drivers have no choice but to pay, as it is at a motorway services.

Motorists will have to wait until later today to see if Chancellor Alistair Darling chooses to increase the price of petrol further through higher taxes.

It is estimated that petrol is 17p a litre more expensive than a year ago and now costs an extra £8.59 to fill up an average 50-litre fuel tank.

The AA claims motorists are paying £18.41 a month more for petrol than the same period in 2007.

I remember when it was 70p a gallon and thats the truth:o:x:

But I was not old enough to drive

hmmm...its been a while since I've seen it as cheap as 110.9p litre !!!!!

Diesel, which is the most expensive at the moment is 110.0p at Asda up in Cribbs.

I have been paying 116.9p a litre for Regular Unleaded everyday for past few months...Diesel is even more. :(

Unfortunatly I dont have any supermarket forecourts on my regular routes

if only there was a black market in fuel, like there is in ciggies and booze!!

Couldn't we organise a group buy ? Hire an old tanker to store it in and take the tanker round to meets lol...that'd get people there !

Well there is. Only really for diesel though. Red diesel (diesel dyed red for ident reasons) this is for use of registered agricultural or construction vehicles such as tractors, excavators, cranes and some other non-road applications. Red diesel carries a significantly reduced tax levy than un-dyed diesel fuel used in ordinary road vehicles.

As red diesel is widely available in the UK, the authorities regularly carry out roadside checks to detect unauthorised use and penalties are harsh!

Thing is at the end of the day,we just pay it unlike shall we say France for example protest slightly if they arent happy, good old Blighty coughs and splutters and pays up for everything. We just dont know how to complain or take action we just rollover soft touch or what??:( dont get me started!!

As you know, I am one of the wrinklies:o and I can remember petrol at less than 20p a gallon..........3/11d actually........and note that's a gallon NOT a litre. They put it up by one shilling a gallon to 4/11d due to the Suez crisis with the promise it would be taken off when the crisis ended! Of course, it never came down again so I presume the Suez crisis is still on?

When i worked at a petrol station when i was 17 it was about 35p a litre, seems crazy its gone up by 3 X in less than 15 years, then again fags were about £2.50 for 20!!!

As for £5 a gallon most of us using V power have been paying £5 a gallon for months now.

Perhaps now isn't a good time to mention the British weather:rofl:
