Hi Everyone,

A mate of mine got pulled over today after a car show because his number plates were invalid. He basically still has his show plates on with his name on them and forgot to change them before he left.

What can happen for this?

Well what did the officer do when he pulled him over? He would have found out there and then. He'll probably just be told to fit replacement legal ones within 14 days of notice.

Dunno mate to be honest, only spoke briefly! Just wondered what the worst case scenario would be as I have done it in the past myself!!!

If it is a cherished transfer and it has happened before then if he was reported he could end up in court and DVLA may revoke the plate without compensation. That is worst case scenario.

If anything does happen, the bloody coppers cant have got it the night before!!

Im assuming the real plates were underneath but he had just got his show plates on top? It was an oversight, if the boys in blue, take him to task over that, there is no wonder there is no public confidence in the force!!

£30 fine OR notice of rectification.

They shouldn't do both, two bites at the same cherry, so one or the other. Some forces have policy that they don't do rectification notice (VDRS) and go straight to £30 fixed penalty notice.

Most central ticket offices automatically notify DVLA of the offence as well.

But then a lot of people have completely biased unfounded opinions of the police without knowing exactly what they are talking about.

its not biased and its not unfounded!!

There are too many silly fines being issued, i know police can use their discretion and its a shame they dont use it a little more often.

You mean he had an illegal plate (eg funny font etc) or he was using a plate that did not display the registration mark of the car. The first is a fine, the second is potentially a big deal !

I think in either case there is a max of £1000 penalty, but an option of a £30 fine. For some reason I thought there was a prison sentence involved with false plates, but if it is a simple mistake (I mean it's not like he'd intentionally put someone else's plate on the car), then the straight forward fine seems more likely, or maybe just a verbal *****cking if he was suitably apologetic at the time.

I think it is far more usefull, and important, for the police to spend their time on things like this rather than yobs vandalising property, proper dangeours driving, no insurance, no licence etc etc etc etc etc etc.

I take you don't think they do?

So do I mate............

And I for one can sleep a lot safer in my bed at night knowing that such dangerous criminals are being stopped in their tracks ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Was the car about to be used as a getaway vehicle at a robbery? Did your mate have guns and ski masks in the car? If so......................................... he is probably in trouble!
