Sounds really silly... but what does it sound like when a car is detting? What happens? How does the det sensor work and what does it do?

Mine coughed a bit at 6500rpm and didnt want to rev about it tonight, didnt do it again just wondered if it was the system working and it fuel cutting to stop any damage?

Idiot waits in awe of technical response!

Detonation sounds like little rocks being shaken in a tin can. That's how I explain it anyway. The det sensor (knock sensor) can feel the rattle, but is only active up to 4,000rpm or there abouts.

Detonation is when the cylinder fires before the piston is at the top... NOT GOOD

To me det sounds like a crackling noise kinda like one of those electric stun guns.

going by what youve writen above, doesnt sound like det to me.

and if it was it would put you into safty boost.

You could of just got some water on the maf sensor in the intake or maybe a dodgy water temp sensor so have at look at them.

Sorry guys not been so well recently. Totally forgot about this thread... I did think it could be the PTU getting a bit panicky. It had one a few years ago with one of its previous owners, but it could be ready to pop again

cheers dude, its only ever done it twice now. Once last week and Once on the Isle of Man, so it could be somthing and nothing. If its PTU it should steadily get worse, so if i can get it to do it reliably then i'll take you up on that offer :)

Ive heard stories of ptu's failing when they get hot.

Ive also heard that you should wipe it with a damp cloth to cool it down and if your symptoms go away then its 100% ptu.

If it makes no difference id start checking others things.
