Stage 1 was actually finding some suitable discs, well low and behold I did just that and ordered them Monday morning. They were delivered this morning and I was absolutely speechless at them :D

Lets let the pictures do the talking....

Stock Z 280mm front disc:

345mm disc I sourced:

A direct comparison between the two:

As you can see they are absolutely HUGE in comparison with the stock setup.

Last weekend I swapped my wheels from stock to 18" and wow does it show up how puny the stock setup is.

My plans are to make (at work) a caliper relocation bracket to mount stock caliper on a larger radius. As per previous posts stock calipers ARE good if all the pistons work and dont forget, nissan have carefully chosen them to match the master cylinder volume too.

This will also save me hundreds of pounds buying new calipers as well, so that can't be a bad thing ;)

Any questions? comments? :p

Oh, i have a set of 17" wheels to test this with as well.... (wheels on the red car are 17")

so come on Rob, where did you get the discs from, and what are they off?

are you sure you want to run stock calipers with that larger circumference?

Which one are you putting them on Rob?.....I've still got that steering wheel just keep forgetting it!!!

Mark, what they come off is top secret at the mo :D :mac1:

But, yes to running stock calipers at that cicumfrence, I'm certainly going to have a look anyway.

I've took a chance on outlay on this initial pair to see if it's feesable.

They are going on your old black Z Rob :)

My red one has 335mm on it already :)

And as for steering wheel... Err next time you're up this way give me a shout and we'll meet up if you want? :duffer:

Wow that's cool!!!! I think the car deserves someone like you with the time and knowledge to improve it. I'd love to know what your plans are for the rest of the car......but as I know you wont want this lot to know email me on robjearles@hotmail.co.uk.

I'll definitely contact you next time I'm up and who knows and we'll grab a pint or three!!

Hope the car is running sweetly.

Regards

Rob

ahw, you know il get it out of ya one day ;)

be carefull with the stock anchors, you might find the pads could over heat due to such a small contact surface with a faster running friction plate. but defo look into it, you have me intrigued now

Yes, as I'm sure you are aware, there are a number of factors that come into question when you are talking about brakes.

firstly a bigger diameter disc is going to provide better braking but also adds to the weight (and therfore inertia) which causes issues in acceleration.

secondly, the distance that the caliper is from the centre of the hub makes a difference. The further out it is, the more braking power.

lastly, the bigger the swept area (the size of the calipers pushing on the disc) the better. this means stock calipers are not going to have the same effect as some 8 pot calipers.

Sorry dunk, I know you are aware of these issues. I'm just telling everyone the basics as I am 5 pints of export to the good!

badger1/Rob: I'll be in touch very soon dude! :duffer:

markgixxer: LOL 1/2" makes all the difference dude! Just ask the ladies :hyper: LOL

retro620i: Larger pads for stock calipers? (not had a look yet)

silverbullet/Mark: I was thinking along the exact same lines. I do not know what pad material is in there at the moment (most likely to be stock), but I'm sure there is a better pad available to handle the extra heat.

mgh297: Thanks for those 'stella' points ;) As for Weight issue, yes they ARE heavier, but not a great deal. I'd think it was not noticable at all unless you were using a telemetry setup....

I have 2 more pistons in my calipers though.............but youre right the 0.5" does make a difference

6 pots? :p I got caliper envy

One problem you may run into is that the pad will have less of the disc touching it and will develop a lip.

JoelyP: Nice kit for the money! Seems very comprehensive.

Topless: After how many miles would you expect a lip? I do at the very most 5,000 miles a year in a Z.

I think even with the 315 disc it doesn meet the pad fully so it just creats a lip on the pad.
