CAS out of position to get 15 degrees, causes please?

Just had a mate over and to achieve 15 degrees on his car the CAS had to be at the end of it's adjustment!

Rattling my brain, I can only think of these reasons:

Cambelt out a notch.

Temp Sender Faulty (didn't come up as a fault on the conzult)

CAS faulty

Any other takers?

Early cars had a problem with the cas drive peg, didn't they? Or would that fall under 'CAS faulty'..

I have heard of the cas drive peg wearing on S13's but not 300s?

Hmm.. maybe I've gone crazy with my old age - that's always a chance.. but I thought it affected early ('89) heads on our cars too.

Timing light problem ?

I was going to say that. Had just the same thing after Phil a C & S Wood had sorted my car. He had done a few that week no problem, but J D check it with his timing light and bingo.

Phil took his light to be tested and cam back with a new one.

I'm no techy so this is just a thought. If the heads had been skimmed and therefore sitting lower could this affect the position of the cam sprokets and belt.therefore affecting the position of the cas to give the 15 degrees needed.like i said it's only i thought so i'm sure a good techy can put us rite with this idea.

the belt is fixed between the heads via the teeth and any stretch or deviation is the tensioners job

Not on the untensioned side it aint - thats why adjustable cam pulleys are available, to overcome exactly that, the head skimming and variation between engines. However in this case no skimming would produce that much deviation! Either the belt is out, the CAS is faulty or the locating peg on the camshaft has snapped off and the adjustment is a notch out (the cam and CAS also locate using splines but use a very weak peg to ensure correct alignment)....

correct...not a very common problem though

if the timingbelt has slipped one or more tooth it can be noticed in lack of performance and detonation/pinging for no reason

if the car drives fine and the engine runs very nice, it is a faulty cas in most cases

CAS = Crank Angle Sensor. It tells the ECU the position of the passenger side exhaust cam so that it can calculate things like when to fire the injectors and spark..
