£25 Congestion Charge for cars emitting 225g Co2 per km in London!!!

Geniouse mayor Ken Livingstone has decided that the congestion charge is now an emittions tax by the looks of things.

After October 27th any car emitting over 225g of Co2 per Km will be charged £25 per day to go into london :headvswal this includes cars like volkswagon passats, honda accords etc etc (and my Z) This will NOT cut congestion but leed to many smaller cars in the city (sales have soared since mr livingstone said they would get no congestion charge as of feb this year, then he changed his mind)

Kens quotes regarding the congestion charge...

Feb 2003,

"i can't concieve of any circumstances in the foreseeable future where we would want to change the charge, although perhaps 10 years down the line it may be necessary"

Early Nov 2004

" i have always said that during this term it wil go up to at least £6"

End Nov 2004

"i am proposing one large increase this mayoral term" (when discussing the rise to £8 )

May 2006

"if i am re-elected to a third tirm i would increase it again, probably to £10"

Yesterday

"the new charge will encourage people to switch to cleaner vehicles or public transport"

:xxx: :xxx: :xxx:

Fact is, a single cash fare on the tube is £4 and a bus £2, London has the most expensive public transport in the world.

Bottom line, it will raise 50,000,000 a year let alone the fines for non payment!!

And don't worry, the environment will fix itself and global warming will go away - as long as we pay more money.

theres also a green zone over the whole of London now meaning any lorry over 12 tonnes pays £200 to go into london

theres also a green zone over the whole of London now meaning any lorry over 12 tonnes pays £200 to go into london

that is ****ing rediculous. Is that for all Haulage vehicles or is it based on Co2 levels ?

over the next couple of years that will also include Vans, mini buses, etc etc that fall short of EU emisions, so i guess vans over 5 years old etc

amazing - so haulage companies have to send 2 vehicles, which will no doubt have the same if not more emissions, plus the cost to the environment of manufacturing the extra vehicle in the first place, plus the environmental cost at the vehicle's end of life...

having a fleet of vans an minibuses i've looked into it a bit,

our transits manafactured in 2001 are ok untill 2010 then they will be subject to the £200 charge

our transits manafactured in 2003 will remain excempt for the forseable future

they are also planning to introduce it in other big cities like birmingham and manchester

Im very glad I dont live in London right now ! I travel 7 miles each way everyday too. It takes me less than 10 minutes and costs me £10-£15 fuel a week. No Parking costs and no congestion charges.

Its not every lorry over 12 tonnes - it depends on the type of engine, age etc ...

Some Euro I and Euro II engines comply with the LEZ and others will need to be modified by either

a )Fitting approved pollution abatement equipment or

b )Converting to an approved alternative fuel or

c )Fitting a cleaner replacement engine

The LEZ affects older, diesel-engined lorries, buses, coaches, large vans (exceeding 1.205 tonnes unladen weight) and minibuses (over eight seats plus the driver's seat and below 5 tonnes).

Most vehicles on the road are Euro IV commpliant now days anyway

Well being an employee of the now defunct Metronet (soon to be part of tfL) I would of course encourage you to use public transport. The tube is not as bad as you think and not that expensive if you use it on a daily basis.

This of course would mean less vehicles on the road so that when I am driving round in my van it won't take so long to get to site.

The strangest thing about this new tax is that when you drive down the M1 you are informed by large signs of the fact you will soon be entering the zone and that if you don't want to go into it you should leave at the exit. This is unfortunately the services at london gateway (scratwood). I can image there being a lot of vans and lorries being parked up there with there loads being transfered to Gwiz things (1 parcel at a time) to avoid the £200 fee. Of course all that will happen is that the price of things will go up, shops will go bust and the only lorries etc you will see in London will foreign ones.

I live outside London so don't get a vot eon who is in charge but I do travel into London most days however, the advantage I have is that I usually get the use of a company van so don't have to pay the charge out of my own pocket, although the company does still have to pay it.

Time for a revolution.

yeah thanks to Transport for London for sending me over 4000 letters about the LEZ :wack:

1 for each vehicle - idiots!

why not 1 for each company.....

Save trees - nah we'll just tax the public more :xxx:

Yup, anywhere within the M25 basically - if it's in London borough :xxx:

And the fine for non-payment........£1,000

How's that going to affect food bills etc, when couriers pass the additional charge on to the shops they deliver for??

And the £25 congestion charge - it's definately revenue raising or a tax on wealth. The £8 is meant to discourage driving into London and reduce congestion - which if research is to believed - is working :wack:

I'm glad I left that city 11 years ago

Will this include your Z though? Do they base it on what your MOT emissions test or is it cars after a certain date which have Co2 ratings against them?

well good old ken has to pay for the olympics some how so the easy and quick is to hit the motorist as allways!!!!

No, it is cars from the 'official' list and is from 2001 onwards. So this means the Z32 'escapes' with £8 per day, but the 350Z has to pay £25 !!

I think the older sports cars will start to appreciate in price soon? Sure, fuel prices are raising, but in taxation terms, performance cars of the age of Z32s will escape high taxation.
