Hi all,

MOT due v soon, and I've no rear foglights.

I did have the inner rear brake lights wired in as fogs, but undid that as I liked the four brake lights.

My plan has been to fit some red bulbs into the reversing light area, keeping the reversing lights as well. Now I've run out of time nearly I've realised that there isn't a huge amount of room. Another idea I had was maybe mounting lots of red LEDs into the reversing light reflectors.

Wonder if sharing a reversing light and fog light will fail the MOT though? I'll probably end up wiring in the original mod to get me through, but if anyone has seen a good way of modding the reversing lights into fogs let me know please :)

Cheers

if its due that soon i'd just mount a fog light off a bracket under the rear bumper for the MOT and whip it off after you've come up with a solution

It does'nt take long to wire it in to a reverse light and stick a red bulb in, just do that. Once done its done forever. :)

One of my reversing lights has been converted to rear fog light. Because I never use mine in the winter when the fog and mist is about, I have it wired so that all I need to do is swap over a tiny bit of harness. So that out of MOT I have two reverse lights and all my other lights work as per normal. Have a very small rocker switch in the kick panel, so you can't even see it. :)

I've never ever used the fog light on mine.

Mine has one of the reversing lights converted as a fog light, very neat and has had no problems with MOT's.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I wanted to keep the quad reversing light look though.

For the sake of the MOT I'll just solder the brake light mod back together and come up with a better way of doing it long term when I get time. The trouble I think I'll have is maybe my extra fog light bulbs removable, all the bulb holders you seem to see look quite permanent. Like these

I think though adding a big red bulb in (if it will fit) will end up causing the reversing lights to glow red as well. I think I'm back to my original plan of trying to mount 30 or red leds into each reversing light reflector. Then hoping that theres no law about "the fog light must work at the same time as your reversing light and come from different reflectors" or something along those lines.

Now to figure out the wiring! I think loads of LEDs (if what I'm dreaming up is even possible) would mean a lot of nasty (fire causing) wiring hanging out the back.

I'll remove my centre panel later and try to draw out what I'm talking about, so before I ruin my lovely (green glowing) centre panel you can talk me out of it :)

i had this problem last week with the MOT, it was wired into the brake light on the spoiler and failed on the MOT, took it to a auto electrician and got them to wire it into the drivers side reverse light and stuck a red bulb in there(1 bulb serves both lights). Passed on retest and will do everytime now. cost about 40 quid.

Bored so here is my thinking...

The centre panel has two reflectors internally and two bulbs, which is kinda divided by appearance only from the outside into four lights. The bulbs are in the centre of the reflector.

Reflectors always look quite brittle so drilling it maybe fun, but I could use some of these led mounts, say 9 above and 9 below the actual reversing light, to mount them in through the back of the reflector.

Then maybe some very careful bending of led legs and heat shrink wrapping could do a tidy job?

Now I have two ideas for LEDS, 12v ones or these 2.5v jobbers.

5mm 8.5mA 14v max http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=35782&doy=11m2

10mm 30mA 2.5v max http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ITAG=SPEC&ModuleNo=35839&doy=11m2#spec

I know little about electronics so this might be a fun little project. I'm guessing I can use the superbright leds that are 2.5v max, and connect them in series I'll be ok.

So if I had 6 per side, so three 10mm above and below the reversing bulbs each side.

If each 6 had it's own feed they take a max of 15v (shouldn't go this high I hope)?

I'm not sure where I sit with figuring out what I need to do about fusing it. As a guess 30mA each x 6 = 0.18A :)

I'd like to control it all of the front foglight switch. I'm guessing the control side of things ultimately just operates a relay somewhere, so I could probably get it to fire two relays, an extra one being for my rear led fogs??

I'm not sure this is going to be bright enough for a foglight though. It says 30mcd at 12v typical, so that's 360mcd total brightness, which according to google is 0.36 candela (which I guess means .36 candel light brightness, and seeing as torches are rated in the tens of thousands....)....

hmmm!

I think I need to get a used (cracked?) centre panel to test this on.

There must be a way to have a wireless signal from the front, and just be able to wire in the rear light to 12v feed, any ideas for this electrickery?

what you can do is use your inner stop light bulbs to stay on as rear fogs so you dont lose one of the already useless reverse lamps.

Wheres my reading glasses !! Doh !!

Did you have the inner lights only wired as fogs though.Darryl on here wires them so they all work normally until the fogs are used and you only lose the inners then?
