I´ve just got the news that it might be possible I will get transfered back to the states sometime this summer or end of it; my Z is beautiful and stunning and I would really hate to get rid of it, I would like to know if anyone here has ever shipped a car back from Europe to the states private, I assume I would have to deal with first a carrier who will ship it by boat..then once back there with DOT and EPA? for emissions test etc.. honestly I am totally lost right now and most important what would it cost me to get my Z driven back in the states? I heard many folks tell me it´s best to get rid of it and buy a new one back there..but this one is so stunning new..hard to find inmaculated Z´s now days I would at least want to try to take it back with me.. if anyone knows of someone who has taken and did all this paperwork..customes..EPA dOT and would want to guide me I would appreciated so much..I am sure we have some folks who dealed with this before in our forum...

Thanks guys ;)

If you are stationed in Germany or Europe, it will be possible to ship your car with you. This is only as long as you have your orders, and you have all the DOT and EPA safety inspections done when it arrives in the states. It cost several thousands of dollars for the safety glass, head lights, speedometer, gauges, exhaust, and door beams to be done up to the safety inspection and dot inspection standards in the USA.

The inspection team has a whole checklist of things. These all must be done before a car makes it out of Europe, and passes all dot safety and emissions standards.

I brought my volkswagon GTI back with me. It was hit by a non driving older geman doctor. I had insurance and had it towed to the dealership in germany.

I told the dealership that I had my orders for the states, and I needed my car back quickly. The dealership had done all of the changes for me.

It was inspected in germany and in the states, when it arrived off of the boat.

I picked my car up at the car shipping port in louisiana.

It was easy for me to bring it back.

If you do not have all the safety conversion things done on your vehicle, you will not be able to pick it up or drive it, if it makes it's way across the ocean on boat and arrives in the states.

They will impound it, keep it and you will loose your zed.

Make sure you know what must be done, how much it will cost, and if it will pass the inspections in the port of the US inspections, when it finally arrives in the USA.

Another thing for you to do and keep in mind is, to remove anything out of the vehicle that you would like to keep and see again, when it arrives in that states.

99% of vehicles arriving back to the states on the boats are broken into.

They are robbed by the so-called people, doing the shipping on the boats.

They steal anything not nailed down. I would advise you, to please take out everything that you want, and have to shipped seperately with your baggage.

Take out your floor mats, spare tire and jack, dvd and radio, and any items that are small enough to steal off of the zed.

Better yet, you could even mail it back through the post office before you leave Europe. I had my floor mats, tires jacks, spare tire, and a a few small things stolen, when my vehicle arrived off the boat in the states.

They had me fill out a claim form and paid me for the missing items.

One small problem: I am not in the service, I am civilian, and don´t even know where or how to get all the specs changed in Europe.

have a word with funkySi as he use to be a shipping agent or work for a shipping company,i once shipped my bronco from here to cali and brought it back to uk 18 months later with no problems via ryebeck shipping and sailed from southamton to oxnard in s/cali with a 5 week sailing

ps...depending on what state its destined for i dont thinks theres a lot you need to change except headlight direction and the likes of a smog test that cali makes you do before you can buy the tags (road tax)

If you go to the people shipping your items out of country at the transportation office, they will tell you or give you all of the required info, on shipping a vehicle from overseas to the states. The transportation office should be your first stop.

The vehicle inspection office on your base should be your second stop because they can also give you the required info, since you are a civilian workng over there.

The POV licensing office on the base, can also help you out with any questions and shipping info that you would want answered.

If it is an older car it should not be that expensive to ship back.

They still will do all of the required vehicle safety tests, and insure your vehicle meets all dot safety specs and smog tests. In Germany the inspectors, will check out and go under the bottom of your vehicle checking for rust test's also.

Trust me I know.

I been there bud!

I am military and a U.S. Marine.

I have been over in Korea, Japan and in Germany already.

Try these places out and I guarantee you, that will be given a simple and easy answer, and a quick and convenient way to ship your zed back to the states.

Note: These places are for military and civilian personnel to use, and to refer and receive information from. They will help you out, and give you the required regulations and instructions. They will tell you who, where, and what to do and where to go, and have everything done to your vehicle before shipping it back.

Hello there,

I have shipped several cars to Canada from the UK with Wallenius lines. Exceptional service from southampton to various eastern sea ports in north America

I'm pretty sure the US has different importation laws to Canada though. In Canada a car has to be 15 years old before it is elegable for importation and I'm pretty sure in the US its now 25 years of age!! They are trying to cut down on imports to increase domestic car sales and it looks like Canada will follow suit.

Check the US govenment sites but I dont think you will be able to take it.

Andy
