Tapping Noise, Left of Engine

Just recently, over the cold months, I have noticed a very slight tapping noise coming from the left hand side of the engine. Could anyone hint as to what it may be?

    long shot but i spoke to andy duff about a month ago and he told me the pcv valves could cause a slight tapping as they get blocked up, Dan at DTA sells the full kit for about £93 delivered

    Is it only apparent when under pressure or all the time. If under pressure, it could be a piston ring broke and that would also cause the smoking.

    Nah just when i first start it up and its on idle. No tapping/knocks/noises at all when under acceleration
