Hi i went to a friends garage today to check my CAS timing out. I was with two mechanic friends, one of them works for the AA one for porsche (great).

They looked under the bonnet and said "its ecu controlled" and they couldnt time it up with a strobe gun, but i was 100% sure it could be done as i have read threads here on how to do it but they said it can only be done with a computer... bo**ocks.....

So they said best to just move the cas into the middle for good cause..... great so my timing hasnt been done and the car is still detting and reverting to safty boost.... This is SO LONG.

I told them that i have messages people who work on these engines all day long for a living and there is a way to do it but they wouldnt listen.

Now heres my question to you lovely zed folks out there......

I will be coming to this jap meet 2mow and was wondering if it would be too much to ask for someone to kindly bring a timing gun with them and some car knowledge so i can get this ticked off my list. il be with my friend who works for porsche so im sure he can get his hands dirty for me, although i pretty much know how to do it myself its a piece of piss if ya read this method posted by gruntpa64.....CAS timing method

and of course il sort ya a nice drink for it....

yeah everyone seems to be retards, and they dont listen to me they always think they are right..... ahh so annoying.

it would have been so simple if they just pulled the coil pack off number 1, put the clip on it and strobed the light down the crank adjust the cas to 15 degrees, done dusted slap in the face everyones happy im going home cheers.

just wait till they come into your place and spit in there gravy :hurl:

All yer need is someone to bring a conzult and they can sort yer timing out.

am i correct in saying with a consult you just plug it in and adjust the cas till it reads 15 on the comp???? coz ive read that this can give a wrong ready if the TPS is not set correctly and some other bits and pieces. I know i have already set the TPS to the correct setting just want to be sure?

Plug in the conZult, check what ignition timing it says on the screen, then check with the strobe pointing at the bottom pulley that the pulley timing mark is lining up with the correct timing mark on the lower cambelt cover. If its wrong, adjust it by rotating the CAS...

then whats the point of using consult if i have to use the strobe gun anyway? just to get a correct reading?

Because you need to know what timing the ECU is trying to achieve

  • Author

oh yeah duhhh.

OK ANYONE OUT THERE WANNA BRING CONSULT PLLZZZZZZZZ and a strobe light?

il sort ya out a nice drink like i said;)

All the Consult can tell you (as Andy says) is what timing the ECU wants. It can't tell you what timing you actually have, because the only way the ECU knows that is that it understands the CAS will give 'X' reading when it has 15deg timing.

So what if the CAS is moved? The CAS gives 'Y' reading, the ECU thinks that is 15deg and everything is hunky dory.. but you've moved the CAS, so maybe what the ECU thinks is 15deg is actually 20deg, or 8deg..

That's the difference between 'static' timing (what you set on the CAS) and 'dynamic' timing (what the ECU thinks it's actually getting).

[edit] Bah, I was too slow.. Must advance my timing!

so realistically i need to check both are working together to get the correct timing?

and would be a good idea to adjust the tps again while im at it.

It's not so much checking bot, but.. you want to make sure that the ECU is commanding 15deg timing when you set the timing to 15deg - if you see what I mean..

Using the ConZult makes sure you don't accidentally set the timing when the ECU thinks the engine is cold, or the TPS not 'shut' etc, because you can make sure it actually wants 15deg before you start shuffling the CAS around.

  • Author

ah so its just a matter of warming the car up to temp before adjusting timing or it will read a different timing when it does heat up.

am i following?

Yep - you've got to make sure the ECU thinks everything is hunkydory and is in the right mode to be 'expecting' 15deg.. You can just let it warm up and hope, or if you have a diag tool handy you can be 100% sure ;)

  • Author

ok ok ok diag tool now im getting stressed.... how bouts i just take it to the RR instead?

lol diag tool=conzult/datascan ;) diag=diagnosis

lol diag tool=conzult/datascan ;) diag=diagnosis

Thanks secretary ;)

Yeah - sorry about that, I slipped into short-hand mode :)

haha ok diagnosis program got ya.

I just gave this timing melarky one more go myself.

First of all i disabled my manual boost controller and fitted 1.0m mig tips instead, (this way i know im hitting around the 1bar mark) reconnected the solenoids and retarded the CAS a touch then went for a spin. it held its boost for a couple mins then reverted to safety. i pulled over let the tubs cool then retarded the ignition a bit more took for another spin and it held for alot longer but safety boost again, at this stage i was sure i was doing something right. so i retarded it once more and comprenday it stuck the whole way home at a good 14psi with no detting no funny noise no safety boost.

so till i get the CAS timing adjusted properly this will do fine.

oh and guess what i saw a zed parked up as i pulled off the A10 to open the bonnet it was on a parallel road to the A10 enfield areas, cant remember what road but the car was silver with round rear lights, crome wheels cant really discribe them but they didnt have spokes more like a big dish kinda wheel anyway it was sexy.

Whos is it?????

If you want to bring it to putney I will do those for you, who says londoners are unfriendly, but make sure you don't have shaving foam as an excuse for a hair do :D

Sounds like a plan topless.

wheres abouts in putney is your place then?

oh and dont worry il wear a hat. :)

Alternatively, you could bring the car over my place tomorrow and I'll check it over for you. I don't have time to go to the meet but it's only about 7 miles from me.
