Guys,

Need some idea of how much a decent recon. unit would cost to buy and does anyone know a reputable place to get one?

What problems are you having ?

New Recon Engine is not always the cheapest and best way. I dont really know of anywhere i would trust to get a cheapish recon engine, it depends on how much you wanna spend ?

Gettin yours rebuilt might work out better in the long run.

3, 4 and 5 cylinders pooped apparently, loads of compression testing and load balancing tests carried out. So engine coming out, heads off, and see what is wrong. 10 hrs. labour for removing engine. I've been told that this is saving me money in the long run if anything needs to come out of the engine for replacement etc. Originally quoted 24 hrs. labour just for removal and refitting of the heads...that's without any necessary work being carried out...what do you thing old bean??? Is it a scandal or does it sound fair play guv'nor???

Nico,

Are 3, 4 and 5 cyls. all on the same bank? Or are they on different sides? Curious...

If they are on same side, which...Driver/passenger side?

You might want to try to get an engine over from Japan.

They usually come with turbo's and everything and costs are very reasonable (around $2000)

Only problem might be the shipping.

Mr Smith.

Unforturnatly cylinder four is on the other bank to cylinders 3 and 5 altho 3 and 5 are next to each other with could indicate a head gaskett problem there.

Gettin the Engine out is a lot of work altho if you take it to somewhere like SE if you are down south they will off you a flat rate of 600 quid for a in and out job. Nissan i think quote about 8 hours for a engine pull. If you know the car and have the proper facilities you can do it pretty quick i would say 6 hours is dam good time. ( no comment on how long it took me !) All depends on the state of the hardware, which is why a flat rate can be appealing for this kind of job.

I would fancy new pistons rings (maybe forged Piston) and a set of new head gasketts, would cost around 800.00 fitted so overall cost should be around, 1500 quid mark give or take.

So basically a new engine will cost at least 1200 quid from what i have seen + 600 quid fitting, and then you have to make sure the engine is indeed a rebuild and not a 40K job from japan that is liable to leak compression any time.

If you are down south have a word with Steve E and Craig as they are both looking at rebuilds too. Im sure you could get a discount for 3 of you especially if you are gettin any machining done. They will have a better idea of price that i can offer also as they have been looking into it for a while now.

Hope that helps matey.

Nico,

Cheers mate, that does give me a few clues, someone else I know mentioned possible H-gaskett probs. This would sound right as engine work has been done in the past on one side by Nissan main dealers before I had the car. That was a supposed Oil Starve problem, makes me wonder if the muppets that did the work put it all back together properly???

Too late in terms of getting a group re-build, car is probably in bits even as I speak which has only taken 3 months to get them to this point. Can't wait to get it back, hope they sort it out!

Cheers mate

I had the same problem as you. Oil starvation and blew the same pots. I ended up replacing engine from JAS for £1900. Simpsons of New MAldon did the work of removing /replacing and swapping ancillaries. total Bill £3500. Rebuild quote was around £5k. I got 12months/12000 warranty.

Trussy,

Cheers mate, that's exactly what I wanted to hear...someone recently told me that Nissan are basically the Ford of the Japanese car community, I'm starting to believe after owning a Toyota!!!
