First of all, as this is my first thread id like to thank you guys for the info on this site. I bought my first 300zx in December 2007 and this site (amongst others) has really helped me get a good understanding into owning a zed with some sound advice and tips. So once again, thanks :D

 

Now, when i bought my zed, i had the guy put it through an MOT and the car flew through with no problems apart from the tyres. The rears needed changing and the fronts will need changing soon too. To get it through the MOT (and unknowingly to me) the guy had 'budget' tyres fit to the rear. The tyres he bought were Wanli and the ones on the front are Maxxis, Ive not really heard of either of them?? :confused:

 

As the weather has been bad recently (well since iv had it really) and Ive had the back end step out on more than one occasion, Ive decided to replace all the tyres for decent ones. Ive had a look round afew places and asked afew people to try and find out what the best tyres would be for my zed without compromising tyre wear too much (anything above 7000-8000 would be fine), some of the tyres Ive been advised on are:

 

*Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (or All Season)

*Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R (or RE050A Pole Postion)

*Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

*Yokohama Advan Neova AD07

 

etc etc...

 

Some of which i cant even find out where to buy them from??? (Some could be USA only maybe???). As you guys obviously know your cars inside and out, would you please give me some real advice on what i should get? My zeds got a few mods and its pretty quick, i want to get the best tyres i can at resonable cost and tyre life. Safety first!! :rofl:

 

The tyres are:

 

Front: Maxxis(?) 235/40ZR18 93W

Rear: Wanli S-1088 255/35ZR18 94W XL

just, and i mean 2 hours ago got 2x 235/35/19 falken 452's from camskill £192.20 i looked at a full set and for 2 of the above and 2 265/30/19's came out at about £420. inclding delivery, fitting on top but thats the cheapst i found, even falken direct wanted bout £480 delivered!!!

tried to tell people on here that camskill are generally the cheapest when you take VAT and Delivery on top with the other companies....but do they listen ... :(

 

Toyo Proxes T1-R are the newer version of the T1-S.....apparently 25% better in the wet :)

you get what you can afford at the time. if it was a track car, then yes, you need the best, but this is a road car with 70mph speed limits. regardless of what tyres you have on the car, you dont go slinging it round corners waiting for an accident to happen. drive sensible so it dont matter what tyres you have on. :cool:

 

I kind of agree with mark, having anything but the best tyres possible is kind of foolish in a zed (or any car with this kind of power), because even if you want to drive sensibly, tight corners or a roundabout thats a wee bit wet, it only takes a little bit of acceralater to start sliding about all over the shop.

 

I'd rather forget the bling and "engine mods" because a stock car with proper tyres is going to be that much nicer and probably perform better than a car with budget tyres.

Completely agree with you mark. you do get what you pay for, and the SO range is the best for any performance RWD car. Personally i got on with the SO3's better due to a better milage.

 

But you NEVER skimp on tyres, you can have the best suspension setup in the world, but when a situation occurs where you need all the grip you can get, and you got shite tyres, it wont be me pulling your zed out the bushes!

 

Oh, and people, dont start going on about that crap of "you can only do 70mph", if thats the case why the fook do you have a zed! you own a performance car FFS! I got 12,000 miles out of a set of SO3's by driving smooooothly, but when i needed them when bambi popped her head out the bushes asking for a speed dating session, my god im glad i had top grade rubber keeping me on the black stuff.

at the end of the day its down to personal preference. some swear by toyo, some, bridgestone, some other brands. so who is right and who is wrong ??? just because someone dont like one brand, that does not mean to say there no good does it !!!!!.

Thats what independant tyre tests are for bud! where, incidently, bridgestone has come on top for the last 3 years for RWD cars.

umm. funny you should mention that. i had 2 bridgestone runflats on the rear of mine. got a puncture in one of them, i thought it would be fine to drive about half a mile as they supposed to be runflats. now the tyre is fooked, in other words they dont do what they supposed to do. i WONT be buying anymore £150 each bridgestone runflats. so now what you got to say ?

I will agree with you on runflats.

 

TBH unless your suspension is set up for them, the sidewalls are far too stiff and make the ride very very hard and choppy. BMW had problems with these when they introduced them on the previous 3 series, which has been rectified on the current 3 series as the suspension has been set up to suit them (talking from experience on this one, my missus has worked for BMW for the last 5 years, so ive experienced the differences first hand). And BTW, the SO series arnt run flats :D

anything like this is subjective, the point is that a car with alot of power needs the most grip and traction it can get and the budget tyres just don't provide this as they are made cheaper and do not have the research invested into them, and in the wet (from my own experience) are quite scary, my first zed is only stock but with budget tyres on the back in the wet as soon as boost started to feed in the wheels lose traction and spin up, with a well researched tyre (which tend to be expensive because of this) the loss of traction is limited.

Lol, just make sure you research the compound, if its hard it'll more than likely cause you probs! On toyo's i have limited experience but i know they vary quite abit!

i will have to see what my mate can do. he can get toyo 295x30x22 tyres for £120 each, which is around £70 cheaper than online. i will find out some prices shortly on what he can get. plus, camskill dont do 315x30x18s :confused:

You do get what you pay for....but since the comment was in regards to the Falken 452 I have to say you get a hell of a lot for your money. As good if not better than nearly all the more expensive high performance tyres.

 

Very comparable to the Goodyear F1's (most popular tyre choice) but better priced.

 

Anything not designed as a Ultra high performance tyre is just a Ditch finder on the 300zx..........a suprising number have Nankangs fitted as cheap tyre package deal...... deathtrap tyres !

 

I've not knowingly been in a Z32 with S02's.

 

I'll probably be fitting the 452's to mine over these winter months, before opting for a Road legal slick come summertime.

Just one more question markzx, correct me if im being stupid, but how would i fit 265's if my alloys are 255's?? Is that not the depth of the wheel?? Or are you just saying that i couldve done with having wider wheels on the back??

Hi there. Your wheels width is normally measured in inches and normally stamped on the wheel as a J marking. Such as the normal offset 18" wheels are usually 8.5J front (8.5inch wide) and 9.5J or 10J rears.

 

your right of course I should have asked you what wheels you have before quoting tyre sizes. Again their is some debate about the best tyre combinations, but if you learn from experience and check out what the big boys like Porsche and Ferrari do with offset RWD trye balances You won't go far wrong.

 

The width of your wheels actually dictates the tyre width you can have. There are margins of safety which is usually the tyre can be 0.5 inch to 1.6 inch wider than the wheel itself. Any bigger or smaller could lead to the tyre coming off the rim under certain driving conditons.

 

So if you have 8.5J front you could have a tyre up to 245 wide though I personally feel that that width of tyre causes too much tramlining on the road and promotes oversteer. IMO 225 wide is the best for roads use, but 235 looks better and behaves well. With a 9.5J rear wheel you can have a tyre up to 275 wide but may need the rear arches rolling to avoid scrubbing. 265 wide normally fills the arches well without the need for rolling the rear arches. A 10J rear wheel could have up to a 285 ,but would need flared arches.

Different car, but i've just fitted 452s to my 400+bhp S13 and for a cheaper tyre they are damn good; infinately better no doubt than the Maxxis & Wanli.

 

Camskill are the cheapest, but Falken themselves aren't bad on price either.

 

They have good reviews on SXOC too; but as you'd expect also plenty of 'they can't be any good because they are cheap'.
