Hey guys,

First of all, as this is my first thread id like to thank you guys for the info on this site. I bought my first 300zx in December 2007 and this site (amongst others) has really helped me get a good understanding into owning a zed with some sound advice and tips. So once again, thanks :D

Now, when i bought my zed, i had the guy put it through an MOT and the car flew through with no problems apart from the tyres. The rears needed changing and the fronts will need changing soon too. To get it through the MOT (and unknowingly to me) the guy had 'budget' tyres fit to the rear. The tyres he bought were Wanli and the ones on the front are Maxxis, Ive not really heard of either of them??

As the weather has been bad recently (well since iv had it really) and Ive had the back end step out on more than one occasion, Ive decided to replace all the tyres for decent ones. Ive had a look round afew places and asked afew people to try and find out what the best tyres would be for my zed without compromising tyre wear too much (anything above 7000-8000 would be fine), some of the tyres Ive been advised on are:

*Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (or All Season)

*Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R (or RE050A Pole Postion)

*Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

*Yokohama Advan Neova AD07

etc etc...

Some of which i cant even find out where to buy them from??? (Some could be USA only maybe???). As you guys obviously know your cars inside and out, would you please give me some real advice on what i should get? My zeds got a few mods and its pretty quick, i want to get the best tyres i can at resonable cost and tyre life. Safety first!!

The tyres are:

Front: Maxxis(?) 235/40ZR18 93W

Rear: Wanli S-1088 255/35ZR18 94W XL

Sorry for the essay! LOL! :nelson:

Cheers :D

Cheers mate, any particular type of toyos? Or are they just pretty good in general??

  • Author

Oh and one more thing, a mate of mine runs a race team in the US and he runs Toyos coz of their weight, less unspung weight and all that. Do you think it might apply on Toyo road tyres too??

Cheers

Toyos are popular because they are cheep and as Andrew W put it and I agree. A set of Nearly Bald SO2's will grip better in the wet or dry than Toyo Proxy's can ever.

All the other above tyres are OK, but the only really wet weather performer for the Nissan 300ZX is the Bridgestone SO'2. They are listed as Porsche only fitment and many tyre places will tell you they carn't get them anymore or that they've been replace buy something else. This is utter boll*x. The reason they will tell you this is because Porsche did a deal which means that Tyre shops can't make a masive margin on them.

When you explain they are a Porsche only fitment they'll try and tell you your car will be illegal with them . this is also bull as it was the tyre that UK Zed were sold with.

I've tried most Tyres and their are two that come close ie Continental Auto sport and the Michelin Pilots, but none perform like the SO2's in the wet cold conditions. + they are awesome in the dry and I find that i can get about 6000 miles out of the rears where as the best I've got from any of the others is about 4500. The Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R will last about 4000 miles and are no where near as good in wet or dry.

Bridgestone SO3 are better then Porenza and about on par with the Mitchelin. The Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 are proberbly the best road tyre available in the dry but still suspect in the wet.

This is IMO gathered over 8 years of Zed ownership and at present I have 3 Z32's. I Sporting SO2's, 1 With SO3's and 1 with Continetal Sport.

it only comes up with one toyo for rears anyway. other members also rate falken as well. ive done 225s which are what most have on the fronts. im sure someone will correct me if im wrong. lol

rears : 255/35R18 FALKEN FK452 94Y or TOYO 255/35R18.94Y PXT1-R

front : 225/40R18 FALKEN FK452 92Y or TOYO 225/40R18.92Y PXT1-R

Toyo Proxes come in at -

Rears - £115 each

Fronts - £105.50 each

Total for all 4 - £441 delivered.

Falken

Rears - £98.10 each

Fronts - £79.10 each

Total for all 4 - £354.40 delivered

-------bit of a difference eh

You get what you pay for and believe me besides the superior wet and dry weather grip you get from the SO2. The generally last 1500 miles longer on the rear and 3to4000 longer on the front. Also you ideally want 235/40/18's front and 265/35/18' rears.

I just never understand you lot. The most important bit of kit on you car and you cut corners. Everything you have on your car. be it engine upgrades, handle upgrades have to deliver via that black bit of rubber holding you on the road. That bit of rubber determins how well any of it functions and it will only function at its best if it is being comunicated to the tarmac properly. Anyone who has driven a car round a circuit on slicks knows exactly what I'm talking about. Its penny wize and pound foolish.

you get what you can afford at the time. if it was a track car, then yes, you need the best, but this is a road car with 70mph speed limits. regardless of what tyres you have on the car, you dont go slinging it round corners waiting for an accident to happen. drive sensible so it dont matter what tyres you have on.

hi ther do you no the price for the toyo proxes 235/40/18 265/35/18 as this is the size i have on mine but im wanting to change.

Cheers for your comments guys.

I do agree with markzx about the performance side of things. If i had nothing else done to my car, i would make sure that the car could stick to the road first. Especially on a car with this much grunt. Like i said, i want the best i can get for a reasonable price and tire life. Bridgestone or Goodyear tyres seem to be the better choice maybe? Although a 'nearly bald' set of S02's handling better than the rest doesnt seem that appealing to me? LOL!! Im still up for more advice if anyones got some :D

Just one more question markzx, correct me if im being stupid, but how would i fit 265's if my alloys are 255's?? Is that not the depth of the wheel?? Or are you just saying that i couldve done with having wider wheels on the back??

Cheers

I just had bridgestone touranze er300 's fitted to the front of mine.

No slips, floating about+ proving great on these greasy/ flooded/ icy roads...touches wood quickly. :hyper:

Price? £129.68, fitted for the pair! 225/50 r 16 (rated 168mph, for high performance)

I still say Toyo Proxes T1-S and I (used to) drive hard!!!!

Just to add, depending on where you get the Toyos from, they do several different grades of rubber, some hard some soft. Which supplier you use obviously determines the grade you get, hence some finding them fantastic and some finding them bad...

Without doubt Falken 452, if buy from a fitter that is one of their stockists, you get a great deal; paid £138 for two fitted and balanced.

i used to use uniroyal rain sport 1's there a softer compound tyre containing silca they are brill in the dry and have amazing grip,, but when it rains there even better especialy when its greasy... also a company already mentioned was kamskill they do cooper zeons 2xs they are avons sister company in america they are eqivalent to zz3 thats what i have on now stamp on the breaks and you stop i think i payed 266 for 4 delivered

I still say Toyo Proxes T1-S and I (used to) drive hard!!!!

I used to love Toyo's - had them fitted on the MR2 since I got it.. soft, grippy, progressive.. less outright grip than the S03's but so communicative they were easy to drive on the limit.

I knew the sidewalls were a bit soft though, as turn-in wasn't quite as sharp (I'd expect that to be more pronounced on the ZX - the MR2 only weighs ~1000Kg)..

I just switched to Yokohama Advan Neova LTS - OE fit on the S1 Elise - and, wow.. I didn't realise just how soft the sidewalls on the Toyos were. The Neova has a reputation for having a very very stiff sidewall (but is still wonderfully progressive, but with more outright grip than any tyre I've ever driven) and the car is totally transformed...

Seriously - the only thing I know with more grip (in the dry) would be a cut-slick like the A048 or Toyo R888, and in the wet the Advan Neova is streets ahead of a cut slick.

The only thing is.. I can't find anywhere in the UK that sells anything other than the S1 Elise sizes (195/50R15 front, 225/45R16 rear), in the US they're available in lots of sizes :(
