Just been reading a thread on the GTROC about someone who has given the R33 rear lights an up-to-date look by converting them to LED

http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/upload/74161-r33-custom-led-tail-lights-group-buy.html?highlight=led+rear+lights

Personally i think they look great. And as it seems to be one of the latest technologies used in the industry, has anyone thought of making something similar to use in 99 spec rear lights. I cant help but think that they would suit an LED conversion!

Anyone else think the same, or am i just talking pish???

coopers-swb has LED 99spec "style" converted lights. There was an ebay seller who was doing them.

and there is a US company that do a proper 99spec led conversion but they want silly money for it....I cant remember there name/website...somebody else will remember

Surely they cant be that expensive to make. If i was any good with electronics, id have a crack myself, but its been years since ive picked up a soldering iron.

Im just suprised no one on here has had a crack

You could always just change your bulbs for led bulbs, must have basically the same effect?

Not really, as the original bulb will be a little cluster of LEDs, but if converted properly the whole of the reflector area will be replaced by LEDs.

I've tried the bulbs once and they're rubbish imho, as there light projects out in one direction they don't have the benefit of the cars reflectors (like a normal bulb) within the light and end up being less bright, you just see the bulb and not a bar of light reflecting (hopefully that made sense, its monday!!)

Dam the 300zx rear led lights for the 300zx are very expensive at almost $1500 a set.

Yeah - Clearcorners have always been extremely expensive.. given our lights are just straight bars it ought to be fairly easy to build your own LED strips on some Veroboard..

I have indeed got led 99 spec rears.

I was contemplating taking them apart when I got them so you could all have a look at how they were done but they have been done so well that it would be a shame to ruin them.

Steady on, we've only just met.. ;)

I say it ought to be fairly easy - but I have to be honest, I've not got around to doing it yet ;) It's a lot of soldering, mind - I hope you have steady hands and don't value your eyesight..

[edit] I wonder if some of these (they come in all colours) could be strung together and be bright enough:

I'm sure it can't be that difficult. Does anyone have a spare set of rear lights for practice ?

Also anyone fancy converting a 110v rear green glowing centre panel to red?
