Some months ago now i noticed some bad noise coming from 1 2 and 3 of the gearbox, turned out to the the input shaft (i think), it dissapears when the clutch pedal is pressed.

I got a very low mileage gearbox for a mere £200 from Japcars, over in Hythe and had it fitted.

The guy local to me in Twickenham noticed a piece of metal on the sump drain plug and suspected it could be part of the synchro.

I started the car and couldn't believe how quiet it was then drove up the road noticing i crunched 4th gear but after doing this time again on the way home i knew something was up!

Called Japcar and told them of the problem who very kindly offered to repair the box and return all in time for Christmas.

I picked up the car and on the motorway noticed a high pitched whining from 3rd and when i filled up with fuel to re-start also noticed the starter motor sounded very crunchy!

I got home and decided to give th ecar a once over and noticed:

1: Reverse light not working.

2: Loose heat shield knocking around the exhaust.

3: Left exhaust now too high and knocking on what looks like a very small strut brace under the car.

4: More seriously the gearbox sump plug was loose and oil had leaked out.

when i filled it i had lost about a litre.

5: Now when i'm stationary i hear the old noise and it dissapears when the the clutch is engaged.

It's nowhere near as bad as before and i should note when i filled up with oil it was probably different to the oil they used.

I now cannot be bothered to take it back again as i've lost all faith and don't want anything else to happen.

My question is will it harm the box if there's two type's of oil in there and is Redline MT90 the best for getting rid of any noise?????

Finally has anyone else had similar problems because it's really pissed me off and i even thought of selling a few weeks ago!!!

sorry about your probs mate but its the classic "pay peanuts and get monkeys" i would,nt go back either

I too am sorry to hear about your problems Alex but I have to agree with znut. Given the fact that rebuilding a TT gbox costs several hundred pounds just in parts never mind the labour it does sound highly unlikely that anyone would sell a good second hand box for £200. IMO dont waste money on buying expensive MT90. The box you have is fubared and no amount of MT90 will mend it. Only new synchro cones and other new parts will fix it.

Surely the noise dissappearing with clutch engaged is release bearing?

Nothing too serious either if it is this.

i to have a whineing gearbox and when i bought the car i too thought it was the clutch bearing, had new clutch fitted but the noise is still there,

at the moment im just putting up with it

if the noise goes when you depress the clutch pedal , chances are its the froont bearing in the gearbox , had this a few time with various cars , the only real way to find out is to get someone who isnt going to do a bodge job and strip it and more then likely strip the internals

Funny that mine whines as well was going to do an overhaul in the summer unless i can fine another manual box

I think for now i'll put up with up as just enjoying driving the car...

Maybe later on will look again at a newer gearbox....was going down the (late 96 with improved synchros and bearings) route Paul at SWZ was enquiring but never got back to me with a price......
