i'm quite techy so i think i would be able to work them out, but do they come with instructions and whats the most useful thing you can do with it?

Its not a case of knowing how to use the datscan, it's knowing wha to do with the information it gives you. How to solve the problem that it is flagging up.

I can use a computer but if it is telling to change the thingy on the whatsit i haven't got a clue.

Heres the thread with the list of people with this wondeful piece of kit anyway.

Good luck with it if you do go down this route though.

there a wonderfull piece of kit for letting your friends think your a genius with zeds

if you are engineering minded and understand how things on a car work the info it gives you is fantastic, if you dont have a clue then its a expensive fault finder for the ecu.

ConZult is much much better but you pay for what you get :)

i'm a physicist i know how an engine works more or less and you dont learn anything unless you try, and ive always wanted to get something like this to look at what the ecu is seeing from the sensors in situ.

i'm slowly aquiring all the tools i need to work on my car myself but they aint cheap.

thanks for you replys tho i think you have made my mind up, i saw them on ebay but i was wondering if you can get them on here.

My advice, get one. Its kinda useful to be able to watch your car over time, and see if trends change. Datalogging and comparing over a year and such. Checking to see if airflow is ok, being able to switch off cylinders, controlling other parts of the engine can help to troubleshoot that annoying - 'which one is ticking more than the rest' type scenario - as being able to see the O2 sensors etc.

For instance, here are some logs of the output:

Cheapest i've seen in ebay is about £30 or so.

Does anyone else have the problem conecting datascan to the laptop via a "serial to USB" conector??

It worked fine on my old laptop which had the serial port but my new laptop only has USB and although i have a converter(with software) it just dont bladdy work??
