Ok so after a few weeks trying to source a gearbox and ordering one for £350 which didn't arrive after two weeks and finally getting my money back and finding another low mileage one (30k miles) almost fitted when the gearbox chap tells me the starter is well and truly ****ed!!!!

Another two days after i should have had the car back he gets a new starter (as the old one was not refurbishable!!!!) and fits it.

Tells me it's all ok and engaging in all gears ok.

Good news is it's now very quiet and as the old one sounded like reverse in 1-3 i am very pleased!

However he did tell me he found a very small piece of metal on the drain plug which is something to do with the synchros........!!!!!

To cut a long story longer all gears are fine except 4th which will engage but crunches at speed, not when stationary or when moving slow.....

What should i do now....go back to the guy who sold the box and try to get another or just make do with it?????

The car has been running with the bad gearbox for so long i'm just pleased to get it back!

Think i'll ring him tomorrow.......i'm thinking he should pay to get it fixed....even though the box was £200 inc VAT....

Why is nothing ever simple??????????

Yup the diagnosis is probably correct, I found a bit of synchro stuck to my drain plug, looked it up in the service manual to confirm it and mine also does not like fast changes in 4th.

Think you need to speak to him first and see what he says

Refund time, 4th gear syncro failure was failry common on early box's! And what with 17years added to the tally, a fully rebuilt one would be the answer alex. Go back and moan mate.

Manual conversion ?????? lol

It is manual ! LOL

To be honest for £200 you got what you paid for. A rebuild will cost you at least another £500 I reckon.

Rebuild will cost in excess of £1000 just in parts. Nissan uprated the internals and the old style synchros are not available so you need to buy all the new parts not just the synchros...

If he sold you a box as being A one get a refund. Other than that Double-de-clutch on fast changes to 4th. My SWB NA is the same, but double-de-clutching is what you do with a staight cut box that has no Syncro.

Or fill box with redline mt90 gear oil this normaly cures the 4th gear syncro problems.

HIDES NOT CURES ;)

The problem with manual rebuilds is 3rd gear.Nissan modified the syncro assembly and the fork has to be replaced which makes it very costly.

OS Giken do a upgrade kit for the box which includes 3rd and 4th gear clusters and both syncros. I'm sure its about £300.

I'll check it out and post back

Right had a word with RB motorsport and the kit is for 3rd, 4th and 5th, but it isn't as cheep as I thought. It retails at £800, but they will negotiate and I got 10% of that price, but I've had OS giken stuff off them before

The other thing to bear in mind is that it is the same gearbox on the GTS Skylines which might be easier to locate a good low milage box.
