I have been thinking in investing in an orbital polisher. I love polishing my car/bike but by the time ive done a paint scrub/polish/wax im completely shagged.

Now i dont know alot about orbital polishers, whats good/bad about them and what i should be looking to pay.

So to all the "show & shiners" out there, opinions and advice please!

Nick

Hi Nick,

This is what I've got:

Portercable7424

It is one of the best dual-action polishers on the market. I recently helped a friend de-swirl his black Gallardo with this polisher and the results were stunning!

You'll need a transformer to operate the polisher as it is a US model (ie 110v), something like this:

Transformer (750Va)

The 750VA one will do nicely.

Product wise you can go in many different directions. I normally use polishers and waxes specifically designed for use with polishers as the normal stuff you buy from Meguiar's is not suited for polishers.

I get a lot of my stuff from:

Performance Motor Care

Best advise I was given was: preparation, preparation, preparation. Prepare your paintwork properly and polishing/waxing will be much easier. Also, do not apply pressure to the polisher when working it - the weight of the unit itself will do the work.

There are many sites which detail the various processes a DIY detailer can use.

Good luck!

Dan

Meguiarsa are releasing a 240v version of the Porter Cable (which I have too) - seems expensive but no worries about transformers and a couple of guys I know that have tested it (pre-production) says its spot on.

Meguiars G220EU Polisher

If you really want to learn about how to care for your car PROPERLY, check out http://www.detailingworld.co.uk - I learnt loads from the guys and girls over there, and got some really useful links for buying stuff (worlds apart from products available on the high street).

Hope this helps, but if you want any more info then feel free to pm me :)

Cheers Dan.

Ive been using Meguiars for ages, currently using there 3 stage system, and for i hand based polish, I think the results are pretty good. Im just very aware that the next car I get will be at around 15 years old. And if i get my way it will be black, and to me there is nothing better that cyrstal clean black paint.

Now ive just got to ply the missus somehow into buying me one.

Once again, cheers matey!

Cheers fella, ive just registered. Ive been following the basic techniques for a while (properly rinsing the car, one panel at a time top to bottom, seperate buckets to wash and rinse) and im really getting into it.

But ill deffo keep an eye on the meguiars polisher, there stuff for novice polishers like myself imho is pretty dam good.

ill let you know which polisher i get. But be prepared for lots of PM's with daft questions tho!!!

Cheers Dan.

Ive owned a few black vehicles (cars and bikes) and i agree they are hard to keep clean, but for me its worth it when they are clean, they just look stunning.

What do you find a fight when the sun is out???

yeah i know what you mean, hence why i want to get into proper polishing. Ive seen a few black cars now that have been properly polished, and its just gorgeous.

Ill let you all know how it goes anyway
