Can anyone help me please I face a dilema. I want to buy one of the following cars a Nissan 300zx tt, Toyota Soarer 2.5tt and a Mitsubishi GTO tt. I'm doing some backround checks on what they are like to own and what power the standard internals can take before they need forging for example I have been told that the Soarer can handle upto 500bhp and still remain reliable before a forge or Supra bottom end is called for, I'm starting with the 300zx tt, Please help as out of the bunch it's a 300zx tt and Soarer I'm most interested in. Once again Please PLease Help.

Some say up to 600bhp, others say 400bhp from standard internals, im sure a few others will come along and give you some Opinions

VG30 Cranks can take up to about 700bhp or something like that. It's the pistons that tend to weaken over time. Rods can bend too.

Flame suit on

Soarer if you want reliability and something a tad easier to work on

oy, get your coat  :D

Shhhhhh I already left

I'm aiming for 500 on standard vg30 internals so I may be able to give you a better answer in 6 months time

The component parts except the pistons are forged. The stock pistons ain't bad, however if using an engine that was previously running on raised boost, i wouldn't even attempt high power without a refresh and forged pistons.

cheers

True though....

I have run my 300 now for 2 years, on and of track with 420WHP with stock internals.

The engine has passed 200 000km now!

Be kind with your engine but run it hard, then its no problem!

Look at it this way mate because it makes sense 300zxtt, soarer , gto ect were designed to do 150000 mile plus running around 280-300 bhp in the zx and gto case not sure what bhp soarer ie is but running a 100 bhp more on a stock engine is asking for trouble !!! 150000 miles might be reduced to 15000 or less !! depending on the condition of the engine i know what dilema you are in mate you want high power for little money unfortunately high power usually = big money the best advice i can give is take your time and find a zx that has had the money spent on it running 500bhp rebuilt engine by a reliable garage big blowers ect not to high mileage on engine and generally make sure its pukka 6500 to 7 bags of sand should get you something quite sproosy !! good luck !

There is no doubt that the bottle next of the 300zx engine is the pistons.

However this is due to the age of the pistons. It's touch and go. Yes, some say that they can get 600bhp out of stock internals, others say they are only good for 400bhp until the landers on the pistons give in.

I think it comes down to the fact that if you put brand new stock pistons in that have not been exposed to 15 years of hot/cold then you should be good for the higher BHP, keep 15 year old pistons in there and the lifespan at higher BHP is going to cause problems.

For my car personally, I've changed the pistons to weisco forged, kept the same compression ratio, put 555cc's in, jwt tubs and upgraded everything possible with the cooling from all rad's, fan's, IC's etc.

I'm not after the most I can get form the car, I just want the engine to be stronger and be able to take a beating when I do want to see what it an do.

Most people upgrade internals to get more power, a few will upgrade for reliability.

There are examples out there running over 500 fwhp on stock internals , its all about the mapping. Stock pistons will melt very quickly at that power if you get any detonation. Piston ring lands are a weak point on high mileage internals.

Although If I were choosing between a GTO, Soarer and Zed I would'nt be basing it on Engine internal strength, but more on what I want for a car as they are all very different.

The Soarer is a soft luxury cruiser, the GTO is a heavyweight 4wd coupe and the 300zx is a RWD Sports car.
