I have just purchased a 300ZX TT manual, when I viewed it, it started first time from cold each time, I have just driven home (170 miles) and it won't start now. I stopped twice during the journey and it started both times, but when I got home I parked it and turned it all off whist I moved the old car and now it will not start.

The lights on the dash come on and it turns over, but just won't fire, I also noticed a smell of fuel when I got out.

I left it for about 20mins and then went back, but still the same problem.

Has anyone got any ideas?

What year is it? Sounds like it could be the PTU of MAF. It won't start now because it's hot, give it a go later when it's cold, should start. Anyway, probably either of the two mentioned issues. Not really that expensive in the overall scheme of things.

 

If it is your PTU, you might be wise to upgrade it to a series 2 PTU which fix the design fault of the Series 1 versions.

Thanks for the welcome, its a 1990, I have know idea what a PTU is yet??

But I am able to do most repairs myself on previous cars, is a PTU easy to replace? How much and where is the best place to get one?

 

Not tried to start it again yet, will leave it a little longer i think.

Welcome Alex. Take a look at the engine by numbers to give you an idea of where stuff is located. The PTU is a common failure on Zeds so is a likely culprit.

mine sat in the garage for a week cos it wouldnt start! wiggled the ptu and off it went!

yeah the ptu connectors can cause non start as well as a failed ptu, make sure they are clean and have no mess on the connector or block, might be worth a retension of the connector

I have just been back out to it again, it still won't start, its been standing about 3hrs now, but still no luck.

I will have to have a look at the PTU tomorrow when its light again.

If the connectors have gone green and crusty I recommend using alloy wheel cleaner (like Wonder Wheels) to clean them up - works a treat. If however the PTU has failed internally, then it's time to get a replacement as mentioned above.

I would consider a simple flooded engine before you immediately suspect the PTU.

 

Pull a plug and see if it sparks and if it doesnt it could suggest an electrical issue like PTU connectors or a series I PTU failure.

 

To check if it is not a flooded engine:

- Pull out the fuel pump fuse. It is a cartridge fuse in the small fuel box on the rear drivers side of the engine back.

- Crank the engine a few times to dry off the spark plugs. (If it happens to spark now dont work because it will soon die because it is not being fed feul but at least you have a promising sign).

- Jam open the throttle by jamming a screwdriver in the hole in the cam cover to pull the throttle cable back.

- leave it for a half hour to air out.

- maybe crank it a couple more times to make sure the plugs are dry and push out some of that rich mixture.

- Put the fuel pump fuse back in and try it.

- If it fires it might sound a bit groggy so keep the revs med-high until it clear and maybe take it for a drive just to make sure its cleared out.

 

Even if this does fix it it is probably worth upgrading to a series II PTU in the long run.
