I'm not sure, it's going to be a messy job though :) I would say a big oil drain pan and loosen just one corner?

I've pumped it out of the dip stick hole - takes a while but it drains the pan almost completely

The one I worked on looked the same - a very dark reddy brown. The box I was working on had a blocked strainer so it did have some problems though :(

topped up took her for a spin but no change with gears still 1-2-4-3-4 but atleast I know that the box is ok??? diagnostic test doesent work on mine? so if anyone has any idea as to why it doesent change gear properly I would love to know?!!!!!

u sure its got enough oil in? I did mine about a week ago, put in what came out but I was still 900ml short. Very hard to read the dipstick too.

I put about 4.20litres of dextron III still needs half a litre but I ran out! but the gears have always been like that?? as you say reading the dipstick is a nightmare!!

Sounds like either the valve block is sticking, or the bands are slipping. Clicked on your, 'pic of the fluid colour' link, and got a Toyota Previa?? If the oil was a dark red, almost black, or with black streaks, i'd say the bands are slipping, either way, sounds like a strip down and rebuild job!

IM SURE THESE GEAR BOXES HOLD ABOUT 7 LITRES FROM EMPTY A LITTLE LESS WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN DRAINED DUE TO OIL IN HARD TO DRAIN PLACES

MIGHT BE WRONG THOUGH

Probably didnt drain the torque converter, pretty much impossible without removing it.

Im hoping its something electrical?? the oil was darkish brown may not of been changed for years??

The previa pic was me clicking on the wrong link! but if you go down page abit theres more of the right thing!!

I read that it was 5litres ive gone to 4.20 needs at least half a litre or so extra?

8.7 litres it says on a TT in the big manual. Even more if you fit an after market cooler. In the end I went out for 5 minutes, checked the levels while the engine was idling, did this three times. Looks overfilled with the engine off but it does say check with engine running.

Im going out to buy some more soon need it right coz im taking it 80miles later dont want her to cook on me!

The trick, way back when I did autos, was to make sure the dip stick was really dry before dipping, and remember, warm, engine running in park or neutral.
