i've just bought Petey099's swb manual, and although it beens modified to a certain degree, i'm wanting to make it my own.......if that makes sense!

I was looking to first uprate the intercoolers.......and possibly change the suspension. I know that both of these are not gonna effect the power of it, but they're getting changed for piece of mind and to support future mods!

Anyway, my question is......

Is there anywhere that will take your car, you tell them what u want done to it.........and they'll get it to that spec??

I'm assuming that to reach 500bhp (at the wheels) it's gonna need a full rebuild with uprated internals and a completely different set of turbo's???

Thanks for any advice

Mikey

Yes if you wanted to, once block is opened all can be assessed for you, i hear Jimmer is handy with a spanner ;) and most deffo for the parts from smithys place, you can get the 5 bolt down pipes there and price up the turbos ( though not listed), am sure you'l be taken care off :D

cheers for all your help guys.

I'll wait and see what the garage reckons it could be, and then start shopping around for someone who's willing to do the rebuild....... *cough* JIMMER *cough*

BazzaJG's engine was also built by Phil @ C&S Wood

Took mine over there this morning for the lifters doing. Top bloke is Phil.

Ah the 500bhp Navana. Before you start throwing thousands of pounds at your car let me ask you a few questions.

What do you want to use the car for?

Would this be your every day ride?

Can you afford to pay £5K ayear insurance?

If not would you really want to spend all that money on a car that if it got nicked, crashed or pulled for a VOSA inspection, it would be lost and no pay out.

500rwhp is a figure talked about a lot but very few ever reach it and when they do the car is normally unusable as an every day ride.

The car you've got is proberbly about 320 to 340 bhp at the crank so about 260 to 270 at the wheels. An extra 60rwbhp would make it feel twice as fast.

It wouldn't need a rebuild for that power. You wouldn,t need a £1500 clutch to hold the power. you wouldn't need to upgrade the 3rd and 4th gear clusters with OS Giken or Quaife, You could spend a couple of grand on bling

for the engine bay and tell all your mates that it's 600bhp like everyone else does. They'll believe you because a 400 to 440 Fwhp (320 to 360rwhp) is awesome and they most likely never ever ride in anything that fast.

Save your money for about 3 years and then buy yourself something like a noble or a Ferrari 355 or such like.

400rwhp =

Big brake kit

Good induction

Sorted free flow exhaust

Boost controler

440 or 555 injectors

lightened pulley set

Lightened flywheel and uprated clutch

Uprated 15 row x 235mm oil cooler

uprated Rad

and enjoy.

Well,

the car is only going to be used for going to meets and having a nice leisurely drive at the weekend.

I have a xsara that i drive everyday, so the zed is totally a second car.

If it came to £5K a year for the insurance.......im sure i could afford it.....wouldnt be happy about it....but i'd pay it!

As for the list you've said will get to 400bhp, i already have most of that on the car!

i would only need:-

Big brake kit

440 or 555 injectors

lightened pulley set

Uprated 15 row x 235mm oil cooler

uprated Rad

The 500bhp aint gonna happen overnight though. I'm wanting to get the required internals fitted first and then fit any external parts at a later date......adding bits as the insurance come down each year!

I also forgot to say you'll need bigger IC's. I think side mounts are the best as they don't interfere with the air flow to the rad etc. then have the chip remapped (providing it has a socketed ECU)

If you really want to go down That road then looking at the Z1.motorsport & amzperformance rebuild kits and their power kits is proberbly the cheepest way to go at the moment because of the exchange rate. Then have a word with Phil at C & S Wood 01942892568

Don't think I'm trying to put you off, but remember I warned you   before you fell into the Dark financial Abyss of high powered Zed ownership.

thanks for the warning mark.

I've always wanted a powerful car......and i love everything about the zed.......so it kinda makes sense.

And now that it looks like i might need a rebuild anyway, why not go for uprated parts to help me on the way???

Would it not work out cheaper to buy nend's JUN engine and build from that?

  • Author

i did think of that....but i aint got 6K lying around!!!!

he has a shortblock with with tomei internals for 4K.....but i dunno what the difference between the shortblock and longblock's are????

"More power" in the words of Tim the Toolman lol.

a fortune lol getting most of it from Z1 here (clicky linky) makes sense with the strength of the £££ i think

as for power I`d be happy with 400-450...............for starters ;) then we will see what happens after that, might go for a bit of head work etc when the time comes

Any idea what their shipping cost are like. Thinking of buying a 60k service kit from them but can't find shipping info without filling out War & Peace!

If you were really going for a 500rwhp figure then It would be a consideration, but if aiming for around 400rwhp mark then you rebuild own engine for much less.

  • Author

well, i did consider buying an engine from nend....but then i had a think to myself.

Since im not wanting to (more like cant afford to) go straight to 500bhp, i was wanting to get all the internal work donenow......so it'll just be a matter of altering the external stuff when the funds allow it.

it will dpend on how heavy it is i guess, if u have a link to the kit or tell me whats in it i will have a look for u

I had a full rebuild kit of Mitch at AMZ, Pistons, rods, studs, Valves, springs, lifters, water pump, oil pump, full gasket set, NA oil squirters PCV's and pipes, cam belt tensioner, cam belt iddlers. The shipping for all that lot was $148.00

All the knock sensors and harnesses + and extra 50K sevice kit etc I got from courtesey and smithy an mjp and even Ryan at Ztech whoooo. :slap:

For some reason it wont let me select any of the options for shipping???

The stuff I bought came to $350 for shipping but the consigment weighed 140lbs

You can try emailing Shawn Holleman from Z1 on (shawn at 300zx dot com)

If I was to get another Zed with the intention of making it high powered and trackable (do you really want all that power if you are not going to do something with it? 500bhp on the road is pretty uncomfortable) I'd get it to 350-400bhp which is easily attainable at a practical cost then the first thing I would do instead of spending thousands on that extra 50-100bhp would be to strip it out and renew/upgrade the suspension and bushes etc. Driving around in 300bhp everyday its easy to forget how powerful the car is. The Zed has so much weight inside with the dash and the seats that are as heavy as a granite block. BHP per tonne you'd probably gain 50bhp just by removing all the crap. Plus all it would cost is the price of a decent bucket seat and harness.

Lately I reguarly see cars with only a fraction of the BHP having more fun around a track than the big skylines etc. I'm currently drifting a 140bhp e30 bimmer and have just as much fun as in my 550bhp Rx7. The adrenelin isn't the same when you accelerate but there's so much more to driving a car than that. Much better to spend your money on good seat time at a track than on getting huge power. Its not how much power you have , its what you do with it. Easy to say when there's 550bhp in the garage (currently broken) but I'd honestly say I have just as much fun with 140bhp!

I think you may have a point there!!! It wasnt until i had to start driving the xsara again, that i realised just exactly how much power the zed has!

I think that, as you say, 500bhp might have been a bit too much of an aspiration.........where 350 - 400bhp is a more realistic figure, while still retaining it's drivability.
