Woohoo.

Well done,bloody hard nowadays!

All a bit easier when i did mine in '87, The examiner walked between alleyways to observe me :wack:

Gently does it though eh?

I treat everyone else as a blind ignorant twerp- especially t junctions + roundabouts.

'it's ok.weve made eye contact, so i know hes seen me'...so why's he still turning into my path

Nice one mate.

Wait till December/January and bike prices are rock bottom, especially in dealers.

Dunno if I'd get an R6 first - maybe a Suzuki SV650 or a Yamaha Fazer 600.

Sv 650- good choice!

Enough go, handle really well.'forgiving' nature, r6's are definitely more 'high siders', if you shut off too quick.

Why not mate? Do you think it'll be too powerfull for a first big bike or something?

If you get a R6 for your first bike just treat it with the utmost respect. The fazer is powerful too. the SV is a twin fast but not so aggressive as the 4 pots. My 650 Bandit is quick but quite tame by comparision. Just be careful and break yourself in slowly. Those bends come up real fast and thats where most people have their first encounter with gravel rash mate. I know what I am talking about I have been there......some of my bikes

Welcome to the wonderful world of two wheels.

a R6 for a first bike  take it very easy there very quickyou should get a honda C70 :x:

They're fast but they're also quick steering and bordering on unstable (as most full-on sports bikes are). Brakes are very sharp too and can catch you out in the wet at first.

You'd probably be ok if you were careful at first.

I had two R6s. And two R1s. (I write for motorbike mags for a living: Superbike, MCN, Bike, RiDE, TWO etc).

I find R6s a bit uncomfy / impractical to be honest.

I'm not saying don't get one, just consider all the options and remember sports bikes are much more uncompromising than sports cars.

congrats on passing

tbh i would avoid any full on sports bike for at least a year

its getting to the wrong time of year for them anyway and the R6 in particular is known as a fast steering bike ie its twitchy.

you will struggle to get sports tyres up to temp also and that will add to the feeling of twitchyness

get yourself a half decent winter hack and get some miles under your belt before the weather gets too bad then if you arew feeling confident keep going thru the bad weather and build up some wet weather confidence.

you havent lived till youve dropped your bike a couple of times  and you will...............trust me - it would be a shame to wreck a good bike while you are still learning

the difference between a R6 and the CB500 (or whatever) that you learned on will be vast and you could end up ruining your confidence before you start

get the r6 just treat it with respect i bought a zx6r for my first big bike n love it yes i dropped it but wernt moving dont go stupid n you will be fine but above possts are right there is a hell of a difference between the 500 u passed yer test on a sports 600 if yer ever in w yorks we will have to go for a run out :)

and dont be looking at yourself in woolworths window riding past in the wet incase you have to grab the brakes because you will get a Big lesson in repect for these brakes  i remember passing my test on a RD250 back in 78 and going out the next day and buying a GS1000, ime totally amazed ime here today to reply to this :D

how much does a test cost these days? iv been riding fairly big scramblers for years but want to be legal for once LOL

mine cost me about 450 in total but id never been on a bike before do it now there making it harder and esentially scrapping das

the r6 is a superb bike and will eat almost all cars out there for not a lot of money, but can be very twitchy as mentioned above and maybe not the ideal first powerful sports bike but hey, it will only do what YOU want it to do so if you can ride sensibly on it until you have a bit of experience then go for it. its an awesome machine. congrats on your test bud.

greg

It hasn't cost me much at all mate. I paid for the cbt which is about 90 or 100 quid. I had never been on a bike before at all. Then i took 2 lessons and passed my test. I'd rode a 125 for a few months between. Luckily the instructor bloke i went with was honest and said im wasting my money if i take lessons. Really appreciated his honesty. I got charged 20 quid each lesson then 60 for the test. So iv paid about 200 quid

Sorry to piss on your fireworks Bird. But! never ridden a bike before. Just got used to only a 125 and now you want to get on a R6. You seem to have bundles of confidence and no experience? You will be sick if you spend your money on a R6 and stuff it? Believe those that know and use the advice given. Get your self a 600 Bandit or similar. then when you are ready upgrade. you cant loose that way. Learn to walk before you start to run. :nono:

get in that deep end :D

cheers bird, am seriously considering going for a test/lessons

My brother in law has always been into bikes, from stripping them down to rebuilding them but had never ridden anything over 250cc, he decided to sit his test last year after riding since he was 10 (he's 39 now) he passed his test and got a CBR 600 and he says even that takes getting used to. I've never ridden a bike but he says its totally different controlling the bigger bikes as you have to lean into the corners to steer instead of letting the handle bars do the steering on smaller bikes and also getting your speed right on the approach. He says riding in the wet is a whole different story lol. He broke both his arms and collar bones after a car pulled out of a junction, had to have both arms strapped across his chest like a mummy and someone wipe his arse for months.

i know what your saying vini but i see it more in the way of i can get the bike and just not be stupid on it. I won't be flying round on it. I am quite sensible

I wasnt suggesting that you are stupid mate. NO way. I have been riding bikes for over 30 years more or less constantly and I am just concerned that you might end up in a mess bud. If you feel OK about it then go for it. I think a fast car is more difficult to handle than a fast bike TBH. But as I said I am used to powerful bikes and have always felt safer on them than I ever have in cars. I think that might be because I rode a bike for over a year before I ever drove a car?

Good luck mate. I wish you well and hope you enjoy biking for many years without incident.

ive a soft spot for the ole lc"s .i had a 350 lc with allspeeds a couple of years ago. very quick bikes in their day. when you say you always fancied a kr1 do you mean the 250 kawasaki or did you mean r1. my mate had a kr1 back in 1990 when new and i had a suzuki rgv. mine was slightly quicker than the kr1 but his kr1 sounded awesome. they were the first of a new breed of 2 stroke sports bike and at that time out paced a lot of 600 cc bikes. 600"s nowadays though like r6 and gsxr are mega quick and far more scary and out pace almost all cars. mmmmmmmmmmm.
