What do you view as your social responsibilty as your'e driving?

My rules are:

I know the road

There are limited cars on the road

The weather conditions are good.

We all know what we are talking about here, in my view if you are nailing out of these parameters you are a fing idiot!

=nail it!

I drive nice and calmly, i dont care for speed i like an enjoyable drive. Just because i have a fast car doesent mean i have to use it. Im not a qualified racing driver and do not wish to pretend to be one. I do vent my anger at other mororists verbally though

i just imagine the people in the other cars could be family and friends and how i would feel if some dick head, totalled them all, the fact my conscious would never leave me if i injured another human being.

It's not speed that kills. It's idiots who can't drive. In my opinion it's people who pootle around at 40mph on national speed limit A roads, and hold trucks up by driving at 50mph on the motorway that cause accidents....but yes they're considered safe drivers cause they're going slowly...

Get off your high horse!!

Drive defensively, everywhere.

Use advanced observations.

Look for the other drivers 'car body language' before you take any actions.

Remember - An idiot is someone who drives to slow: and a maniac is someone who drives too fast.

There are some driving maneouvres you can get away with in a Citroen AX that you will never get away with whilst driving a super sports car, without incurring the wrath of every 'good' driver who is watching you or embarassed by you. Ever!

To prove 'your point' when driving a Zed just go slower and accommodate where you could dominate. Speaks volumes.

There's a million others but no point in sharing any more.

In order of importance.

1/. The ability to read the road ahead.

2/. The ability to correctly antisipate other road users.

3/. The ability to assetain the correct hazard avoidance.

4/. The ability to minimise risk.

5/. The ability to know better.

6/. The ability to handle your vehicle.

If you have the above abilities with the right conditions you SHOULD be safe.

And an easy to remember one is COAST..

Concentration

Observation

Anticipation

Space

Time (keeping space around you gives you time to react)

Sticking to speed limits means you wont get caught by thoses nasty Camera Partnership people, but unfortunately that doesn't make us safer as the static fatality rates prove, despite all the Millions of speeding tickets issued. Reason : Only 7% of collisions have excessive speed recorded as a contributory factor, and some of those are excessive speed under the limit. 93% of collisions happen due to not concentrating and poor observation, and Camera scum don't target that. These are Police stats not mine!

Re Speed Cameras - there's an adage that goes, 'Anything looks like a nail when you have a big enough hammer'.

Laser guns were a solution looking for a problem.

I was a Traffic Cop for 15 years and a Road Safety Officer for 3 years. The same number of people were killed on British roads in 1981, 82 and 83 as there are today - 10 years after Scamera Units were set up. However the income from cameras is in the tens of millions. You figure it out.

Speeders never caused me a problem when on patrol. However, drunk, careless, reckless, innattentive and stolen car drivers all used to cause mayhem. No cameras for those I'm afraid, plus it COSTS to bring them to book, whereas you get income and fabulous swelling coffers from technology policing.

Bitter and twisted? Me? Nah - just realistic. Speed does not kill. If it did then every F1 driver would be dead. That's the applied logic. Therefore it must be 'inappropriate' speed that kills.

So, make the speed limits appropriate on UK roads and RTAs would decrease.

Makes sense - so don't expect the tree-hugging, courdiroy wearing, bed-wetting, liberal, left, nannyist, Eco-warrior, swamp loving types to support it.

Unfortunately it is these types that have the ear of MPs they form pressure groups and they know how to lobby. We know how to moan but not how to cause activity that will stop governments in their tracks and re-think stupid and banal limits and pricing and fuel taxes.....................

Back to bed for a rest now.

forgive but in what way am i on my high horse?

I replied to the thread as i saw fit, It might not be speed that kills, but bloody idiots that think they can handle speed when they cant, ie showing off. I cant handle it so i dont use it!!

I will not buy a micra as i do not want a micra.

If im on my high horse then you must be bloody looking down at me from yours

 She never said she drives below the speed limits ffs!!! Everything you said is correct but was a rather large assumption ;)

Anyway, my priority - know where the gatso's and coppers are hiding :D (jk)

Anyone done their advanced driving course and exam? I have and what a difference!

Some wise and all too true words there mate!

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

RE: Peranaman: Indeed this really does sum up the way I think too - extremely well put my man!

It does annoy me also that when these aforementioned liberals (usually with shrivelled testicles and NO soul, I'm sure :nono: ) make these proclamations about the evils of "powerful cars" from a point of total ignorance, the furthest they usually have to travel is from Islington to Westminster, or into the centre of Brussels etc - They seem to forget that they are the priveleged few who have decent enough public transport not to need a car at all! :smash:

It's one thing lecturing us all on road safety, but when it comes from those who are totally ignorant about motoring - it really makes me Maaaaaaaaaaaad!

Be aware that there may be another idiot on the road.

As for the speed cameras, the only way to make it so they don't make money out of them is to have your day in court. It may cost you more but if we all do it the courts will come to a standstill and they won't make any money out of it.

That's been mooted many times before - BUT........... as you know - no-one is going to make the first step. It's like boycotting petrol stations or refusing to buy petrol for 2 days. About 4 people out of 20million ever bother.

That's the only thing we can learn from Europe (apart from not showering very often) is how to ruin the governments day.

We couldn't organise a Prayer Meeting in a Priory........................

Gwyneth Dunwoody - Chair of the House of Commons transport commitee.

Ken Livingstone - London Mayor and responsible for congestion charging.

Our leader - Gordon Brown.

What do they all have in common??

Peranaman, do you ever post on Pistonheads?

Can't remember - only put an advert on recently that's it I think. Why u ask?

I've track raced, I have passed various track courses, I also have passed the Institute of advanced drivers, I also drive for a living.

It doesn't mean I drive the same in all 3 situations, We are all grown up, we all know the rules, you cant make excuses for all the other road users, just have to make sure what your doing in curtious and correct.

Can't remember - only put an advert on recently that's it I think. Why u ask?

Because we respect the opinions of BiB and traffic plods, current and ex, they're the experts and most of them haven't got a good word to say about the current use of camera partnerships. I'd like to quote your post from page 1 in 'speed plod and the law' , that's the forum you should take a look at if you're interested, or maybe you've had enough of that sort of debate? :)

No probs go ahead - I think I may have a better rant for you - I'll dig it out later cheers Chris

Here Here

+ to add to all the people that post their rules. I would say anyone speeding on a single carriageway in a built up area, or residential area needs banning.

+ always stay within your own ability's on the road and use track days to find what your limits are.
