Looking at buying a Tom-Tom or something as I am going to be doing quite a bit of travelling soon. Always relied on maps before as I feel more accomplished when I arrive at where I intended to be and never bothered with GPS; but for time and accuracy sake, I think it's in my best interests to get one.

Just wondering what everyone uses. Not looking at spending a lot, £150 maybe? Would like one that I could get the speed cameras on (aware they are subscription only).

Cheers

I have had my tom tom 500 for almost 2 years and its great. It winds me up when it goes awire now and then but it does the job and has got me out of a spot or two. I have ordered a Nokia N95 (will be here tomorrow) and I might get the tom tom on that but I will need a dongle to recieve the signal apparently?

si, tomtom is by far the better sat nav, and speed camera`s are free :)

vini, the n95 runs the tomtom navigator 6 version, not tomtom mobile, plus you will need a bluetooth gps reciever as the inbuilt one will only seem to work with route66 software.

Si

The sony system is pukka, go look at it at halfords (149.00), you can use mine for a weekend if you like, but I need it for work.

Thanks Allan. I've still gotta send some money for those clocks! Been away for a while.

Cheers Mario/Vinni

My fave is TomTom, I have a 700, have used it for a few years around UK and Europe and only a couple of times has it given me bum info. However, in the past couple of weeks a Garmin beat a TomTom in a review. It was only by something like 51/49, but it shows how Garmin has been catching up.

Thanks Allan. I've still gotta send some money for those clocks! Been away for a while.

sat nav i use the clarion map560 and for speed camera purposes i use the snooper evolution plus which picks up virtually all forms of detection inc mobile laser, digi camera`s and temporary ones as well as all the usual truvelo`s and gatso`s and specs.(even when i`m abroad).

not cheap but worth every penny in my book

Thanks mate. Does that mean if I use route 66 I dont need to buy a gps bluetooth dongle thingy or is that not needed?

route66 works with the n95`s internal gps reciever, but is not as good as the tomtom overall. if it was me, i would go for the tomtom, but everyone has their own choice.

i've been told the N95 is cr@p as GPS as it looses its signal very easy let us know how you get on with it vini as i was looking at getting one

stick with the AA Giant Road Atlas of Great Britain mate! I have been tempted to invest in satnav but i prefer getting there by my own nouse not with a computer telling me what to do. It does feel alot more rewarding when you get there by your own steam and if you happen to get lost you see parts of the world that you would otherwise never encounter!

I need it for work though mate. If I have appointments here there and everywhere and not knowing exactly where they are, then I'm stumped. Last thing I want to do is be late, or worry about not finding it. I know what you mean, but relying on an Atlas when there's GPS isn't the way to be for me as much as I'd rather just stick to maps.

I have a navman, which was fantastic at first but i never upgraded it and now it sometimes gives me bad info - its great more often than not though, and mine is a fairly old model now. Also i managed to just buy some software for camera locations.

But i would imagine the best for speed camera locations is a road angel sat nav - i have been looking at upgrading to a road angel sat nav myself, i think they do a fairly cheap one now. It maybe worth looking into.

1st one looks good. Price is what I am after too. I'd like the bigger screen, but not sure that I'd need it.

Garmin has better mapping, i`ve used a few and prefer it to the others.

I have a garmin 660. I use it even when I just going to town as it boings away at the speed cameras (came free) and stops me forgetting about them. It also acts as a hands free for my phone, can show pictures off you sd card. It also came with a traffic alert, which could be another thing you could consider if you need to be at a pace on time. I think it was the first one to come with a built in hard drive so you can store some data on it, but not much. The speed cameras are not only the fixed ones but also the mobbile ones as well which can be useful if you are in an area you don't know. Of course the best way to avoid speeding is not to. It also has train stations etc etc already listed so you don't need to faf around looking for the address or postcode, which is good for me working on the underground.

Have a look at them here https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134

Good luck with the hunt.

Re-read what I've written.

Hi Si

I got a TomTom 910 with traffic and it was dead cheap from this outfit...

Have a browse and see what you think

If you don't need America you've got lots of options for something even cheaper

I just did and found

By the way, the TomTom car power supply cigarette lighter connection contains a transformer so it can't be hard wired in. Bit of a pain in the zed.

Hope you get it sorted

Best Regards

Tony

My Navman works well, a little slow to pick up GPS sometimes but also has the added benfit of being a Pocket PC to help keep you organised.

I have got a tom tom go 910 in my lorry. Its great for a car but it keeps sending me down country lanes and along roads with low bridges and weight limits in the lorry

If you want one for Europe it is great and has never put a foot wrong over there even in the lorry!

They all seem to be crap in london!!!! To many tall buildings blocking the signal.

sony n82 or sony n92 mate . have had a tom tom one xl recently and found it had incorrect map data . tried typing in a street that had been there for 5 years . not on tom tom . same street in a sony . hey presto there she is . i have never had a problem or been routed wrong with sony . very good and clear mapping .
