My 300ZX TT-engine took fire yesterday. All that could burn, did so.

A total disaster, I have spent 3 years on engine building, and it was complete in June this year, and now I have to start from the beginning again.

I got a story from a ZX-enthusiast in UK telling me that he always leaves his bonnet open when he parks his car in his garage,- due to the fire risk.

The engine cools faster then. He told me that petrol filter hose clamps that are not well tightened, might cause fuel fumes and fire as the engine increases heat after being switched off.

My insurance company will probably investigate the cause for the fire, so if someone has some knowledge about engine fires after being switched off, I will be more than happy to hear about it.

Bloody hell! I hope no one/nothing else was damaged/injured?

has this kind of thing happened before in the zx community?? First I've heard of such a thing for ANY car! Worrying really...

i dont know about fires when switched off but, mine caught going round silverstone!!! turned out to be the VVT wires were resting on the exhaust elbow. thank god i have under bonnet heat sheilding or the paint would have been ruined!! not to mention the very handy fella with a fire extinguisher

really sorry to hear that it had caught bud but, im sure you will get her back up and running

Nice.

Thats one way to change the appearance of your z. I think the flames down the side are a bit over the top though.

Wow, dramatic !! Be happy you`re alive.

My incident was fortunately without humans involved.

Silverbullet: I like your front. Where can I get one? Rune

Petrol hose and or clips to and from the fuel rail could be 1 reason, the hose I used started leaking whilst I was driving, lucky for me I decided to stop and investigate, had a small fine spray of petrol right across the top of the engine, had the turbos been up to temperature it could have been the same as yours.

hi everyone :)

the nissan 300zx is my FAVOURITE CAR and i really want one 1 day, but i just wanted to know...are all these things you mentioned comon? or just bad luck??

a bit of bad luck it sounds like..............on the other hand.....I had a fuel leak under the bonnet for 3-4 weeks...smelt the petrol fumes, but thought it would be fine....

Turned out it was the pipe right in the center under the rocker cover spraying fuel.

With it getting real hot under there and the hoses made of rubber....they get baked and brittle over the years...

Some might suggest that replacing them if yours are old.......but hey.....thats what insurance is for!! ;)

In the US quite a few Z's have come to their end because of this.

In most cases this is caused by loose clamps on the fuelhoses, causing fuelleaks in and around the engine.

The leaks normally get worse once the outside temperatures drop (especially during the autumn and winter)

So, if you smell fuel while driving...don't ignore it !

I was always under the impression that fuel can not ignite unless touched by a naked flame. Ok, fuel will help the car burn allot quicker once the fire has started but I think that almost all engine fires are caused by electrics. Or plastics against turbo housing etc.

Am I wrong ?

i can smell petrol everytime i start my zed in the morning

Get tightening every hose clamp you can find then!!!

i think its from the dodgy mech who changed my leaky fuel filter im probably gona get the smithy fuel pipes but in meantime will check clamps cheers

And use proper hose clips for petrol not jubilee clips, they deform and nip the pipe and can cause leaks
