I'm just halfway through changing PCV valves that I bought from Mike Feeney yesterday to see if it helps/cures my smoking prob.

Now the old PCV valves i took off (UK '90 TT Man) are slightly different to the new ones. The new ones have a 'plunger' in that is sprung halfway and then is free to float the other half of it's movement. The old ones have a plunger that is sprung all the way to the end.

Quite possibly these are the original ones as i have had the car since 1999 and i have not changed them yet.

Any comments on the above?

Rob.

N.B. My PCV hoses have quite a bit of oil in, why would this be?

Wouldn`t worry bout oil unless its dripping! the hoses collect a bit over time, just system doing its job,as for the springs I was the same as you, asked Mike and its cos they`re pattern valves tho perform just as well at a fraction of the cost, fitted mine early summer no probs to report.

Sorry to butt in but i'm thinking of doing the same thing, Are they easy enough to get at? I thought anything to do with turbo maintenance means engine out.

Nah fella it`s relatively easy to do you`ll need an 19mm extension socket along with an angle adaptor to make life a bit easier. It`s the hoses that can be a pain in the bum, well access to the clips in my case but go for it.Search is your friend here.p.s pcv got nowt to do with the turbos,it`s crankcase ventilation, stops internal pressure getting to high.

Santa? Merry Christmas :p :D only kidding. Thanks will have to run the car about a bit to clear the oil residue I guess.

Chewie, you can at least see them when the bonnet is open LOL, you should have each side changed in under 30 mins.

Sorry lol im a bit confused. i remember posting a turbo problem a while back and it was suggested pvc valves needed may need replacing. I got shit scared and didn't bother because i'm a mechanical moron ( as you can tell :) ) so now i guess there are pvc valves for different things. Anyone got a shovel :o

I`d imagine your post had something to do with smoking then no? Basically if the valves are clogged up it can cause smoking issues and it`s suggested to replace these first if your`re suffering from a bit of fog as it`s a much cheaper and easier remedy if it`s the cause of the problem. As for xmas just been shopping..bloody tescos got they`re xmas choccie packs out! the misus was like ooh should we..put me big boot down on that one ffs! :headvswal
