Read on an american Z Site somewhere that a good mod is to remove the cooling fan thats driven from the crankshaft and fit an electric fan to the radiator instead.

Can lose up to 10hp through crank driving fan, this sorta makes sense...

Any truth in it?

electric then draws more current from alt which draws more power from crank, allso you,ll be in a right mess iff the electric fan went bad mate. iff the price is 10bhp which i tend to think is a little high then in my books its a price worth paying for decreasing the chance of cooking the motor :)

just remove the aircon, more air less stress more power

Then turn your car into a parachute as you drive along with targas off to cool down and counter act any hp gains you may have made. :wack:

Did anybody think , " Oh , I`ll buy a Z32 even though they are a bit slow ? "

I certainly didn`t . Worrying about what effect the fookin` cooling fan has on BHP is , forgive me , a tad anal !

Yes Jay, there can be!

An electric fan will only come on when the temp exceeds 85 degrees, so until then it is sapping no power at all, the car will also warm up quicker with no viscous fan cooling the rad on warm up. If you have an aftermarket temp gauge, a short breif test is to run the car with the viscous fan off, watch your temps very closley and see how long it takes to reach 85 degrees or even if it does :)

I done this mod years ago on a silvia, i know a different car, but the fan only came on about 3 times ayear in total and you can fit an override switch to it as well for added safety.

Last but not least :) how many cars built since the mid 90's have a viscous fan ??

hope that helps

Same scenario if Viscous fan fails

on the flip side, nissan fitted a viscous! this was when electric fans were being fitted to other cars, so if mr 300zx wanted an electric fan he could off. There are pro's and con's to both! Do a search its been done to death before, just like which oil LMAO

heres why i didnt do it, the viscous fan when fully engaged will flow 6300 cfm of air, there isnt a aftermarket electric fan out there that can do that, the power loss is around 8bhp from what i could find out, the viscous fan clutch isnt always running the fan at full bore so the loss isnt always 8bhp, our engine bay is hot and i would rather flow 6300cfm when needed rather than 5000cfm from the best electric fan i could find....its up to you tho , cooling isnt one of the areas i would look to try and increase my output at the expense of capability.

6300 is a heck of a lot, maybe it does that at full lockup and full rpm, but it's only really useful at idle rpm. Wouldn't catch me fitting an electric though.

things people forget bud, is there sometimes missing important items in aiding cooling :wack:

believe it or not, majority of zed's iv seen or worked on are missing the undertray underneath the radiator! as the fan blows air over the fins of the radiator what happens to the air with no undertray! it blows directly under the car, especially on runs of course. this goes the same for the shroud on both upper and lower to the radiator, again people think you dont need them! So if there not there the air is no longer held in a reservoir it goes up over the engine.

so if your 300 has the following the likelyhood of ever needing an electric fan is not nec

undertray

fan shrouds

working viscous fan (the blades crack over time, and also the viscous may fail

regular coolant changes, NOT just water, seen to many times its not good.

services thermostat/waterpump/check of all hoses

koyo radiator

Hot days its worth adding a bottle of water wetter it does work :duffer:

check for blockages to the intakes around the front of the car no good having a tip top cooling systym with tesco carrier bags sucked in your front bumper :smash:

air con removal if your not bothered about it, or you dont use it a fair few degrees can be dropped on the cooling systym, not essential but depends on what you like

may of missed things, but its common sense really

not subscribed so any mistakes cant be retified excuse typo's LOL

Its not good i can no longer call funki si names and then edit (darn) "checks his bovered pocket.

Same scenario if Viscous fan fails

never in 30 years of driving has a viscous ever failed me,its about 2000% simpler than an electric motor in design

Have seen several times on zed's, including on my own Black TT, resulting in Cooked heads :(

lend! should be love my bob the builder friend

"can bri fix it :smash: not with a ****ing mallet this big he carnt! LMAO

another point is missed out............the zed has a electric fan which also comes in under extreme conditions as its not only there for the air con rad, so you have the best of both worlds, and i can set the temp for it to come on but ... then again thats with the aem engine management system lol
