If a Zed loses top gear occasionally could this be the oil seals in the gearbox? I ask as the Zed I am looking at buying has this problem and the mechanic has diagnosed the oil seals.

Any thoughts?

Obviously an auto so I would leave it. There are so many things that make an autobox function / misfunction on a Zed, that the diagnostics alone will cost you quite a bit, from electrical failure to mechanical failure. To fix it is not cheap either.

walk away bud

Well apparently it has been diagnosed as Oil Seals.

Is that by someone with connections to the seller? If so, do not take that on face value. If the car is otherwise sound and you are set on buying it, then have someone who actually knows these cars check it out.

Otherwise walk away - if it's an auto and the box is playing up then the fix will be (a) expensive and (b) will most probably fail in the very near future after it's fixed.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

How much for a fix? And is it feasible that it could be oil seals, apparently they are: Crankshaft oil seal to gearbox and rear oil seal on gearbox. Apparently it is sporadic and not happening all the time. He says kickdown and overdrive are fine?

Thoughts?

probably when the fluid level drops the problem occurs. Top up and its ok until level drops again? - replace seal! if it's a rear seal leaking it's not supposed to be too difficult or expensive. either way, get the seller to sort it before you buy or make sure the car is damn cheap!

OK, going to take a chance on this and pick up tonight, he claims to have the mechanics report outlining the problem, so I guess I will wait and see.

Wish me luck!

We look forward to seeing your ad in the 'Items wanted' section, either for an auto :( box or a manual conversion.

good luck.

by god there is one born every minute.

£800, with 56000 on the clock (verifiable) import.

cheap enough....break her...get more back than your £800

the high clutch pack will be on its way out, so gearbox rebuild, kit on its own to do it is 400quid so its not cheap.

The least it could be Is The Brake Band and the worst it could be is as above! When the Brake band is on its way out the O/D Gear (Fourth) Will start to slip under heavy loads first and then will eventually slip completely altogether and from memory it then affects Third or second gear off the Top (of my head) Its been a while since I have had to rebuild one now.

You can fit a Heavy Duty Brake Band for a Little more ££.

When a Brake band gets too low the Rivets that hold the Clutch Lining will start to Bite into the Clutch Pack Drum causing Deep Grooves which can't be Machined out!! So its best not to keep driving it like this.

Brake bands from most Automatic Repair Garages if in stock will start at around £40 for the TT auto as I've been there in the past with a few Gearboxes. Obviously clutch packs as above will be alot more expensive. :)

7 plates for the high clutch are about £50 but then you also need the metal plates to etc.
