When i bought my Z it had a cheapo black tint on the rear windscreen. This was the type where it's like a film of plastic with some kind of tinting dye underneath. It had bubbled and it was impossible to see anyting out of that window.

I've managed to remove the film without taking any of the heater elements with it, but the screen is still covered with this kind of powdery black residue that seems stuck fast.

On someone's advice, i tried white spirit and a plastic kitchen scouring pad. This does work, but it takes forever, and as you can imagine it's an awkward angle to be scrubbing. In about half an hour i had only managed to clear about a 3 inch square off the glass.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there are better solvent to use than white spirit? Or could i use an electric sander with a scourer instead of sandpaper?

The white spirit should do it if it's a spirit-based sprayed layer that you are trying to remove. As it's taking so long it might not be spirit-based. Therefore, before anything else, try soapy water - you never know, it could be a water-based spray, after that I'd try a celulose thinner but be carefull of removing whatever's holding the heated rear screen element in place.

If it comes to using a cellulose thinner, is there a brand name i should be looking for? I'm kind of new to this sort of thing!

Any car paint thinners will do - not sure if it's all celulose, but I think you can buy it from all of the usual Halfords, Wilco etc - if not, if you've a specialist car paint supplier near you, ask them, they'll most likly know the answer...

Failing that if you are fully comp on your insurance smash it. Buy accident of cause while you are trying to remove the tint.

 

Do a search and I'm sure you will find plenty of threads about this.

the guy who imported my zed took the tints of my back window and totally ruined the heater elements so now no heated window and messy elements so im gona peel them all of then tint it :smash:

Try metholated spirits, yano, the purple liquid that really STINKS..

 

Takes everything off my windows ;)

Wallpaper Stripper, Steam Cleaner, and then scrap off with a stanley blade. Tis worked for me but when you take it off don't expect the rear heater to work as the sticker will peel away the heating element.

I was told that hot soapy water will remove the residue left behind after removing window tint film, but as yet I have never tried it.
