i stuck some tin foil on the inside of my headlights when i was pulling them apart to clean and fix the adjusters because i thought it would increase the brightness of the lights. It didnt and it looks garbage, but i do look like the look the lights in crome with the contrast of the red colour of the car (from afar when you cant see it is tin foil)

I am getting some HIDs soon and might pull out the foil and the same time. Is it possible to spray the inside of the lights with crome paint?

would any spray paint do or will it need to be specialised to deal with the heat from the HIDs and stick to the plastic if it is special heat resitant stuff?

seen a couple of threads where people have done it but they have used mega expensive stuff from the states when i just want to get some halfords stuff!

Two points to consider:

(1) HID's use approximately 35W power which is less than stock 55W bulbs, therefore the headlight enclosure doesn't get as hot.

(2) You can use a Plasticote chrome paint on the inserts - shouldn't be a problem. However, chroming the inserts will not increase the brightness of your headlights. It merely updates the look and could potentially cause unwanted light "scatter".

If you really want to go the whole way I can supply pre-chromed 99-spec inserts. Not exactly cheap at £290 but they do look superb with HIDs!

I did mine using aerosol wheel silver and laquer , no probs at all , got H.I.D ,s fitted as well

A few people have used the aerosol chrome paint , which as a paint is crap cos it marks up so easily but in a sealed headlight has been fine . HTH

Do i need to laquer it?

Danny, any news on when you will be getting your stock in for the HIDs and tension roads in ordered from you?

got any pic's of the inserts Danny. I know what the real thing looks like, but interested to see what your prechromed inserts look like as I may be a customer for those.

I think it has the reverse effect IMHO.

Look Si, that Black is White

Hi,

Got your tension rods in but still waiting on the HID parts. I have been told the kits have left the suppliers earlier this week but as per usual I'm waiting on Customs to send me their import duty/vat invoice. Could be a few more days I'm afraid.

Regards,

Dan

PS - will put up pics of our pre-chromed 99-spec inserts later this afternoon. I need to sort the pics out first!

That's no problem. I can guarantee that you'll have your tension rods next week (at work) and will try to get the HIDs posted if they arrive in time. Failing that I'll contact you for your home address.

All the best,

Dan

I took mine apart. I was looking at '99 spec but they are £1200 + at lukes. Cant justify spending that. So I will do the HID thing but for now I sprayed them with Platicote bright silver metalic and they look OK. They seem to be holding up aswell which was one of my fears that they would fade.

The inserts are there to throw the light about a bit and do the job quite well. One of my better ideas.

What on earth have you got stuck inside those?

PS, spraying them chrome apparently has zero effect on lighting. It throws the light out, but in the wrong direction.

looks like you caught 4 slugs trying to get away from the light and painted over them too!!

only messing. Looks good and i think i will try the chrome plasticote on my lights. Post up if you do experience any problems with it.

Si, although it would scatter the light more having the inside of the light painted chrome it is better than it being absorbed by the black surface. It wont have much affect on the length or strength of the beam but it would make the lights appear brighter and therefore easier to see for oncoming obstacles and give them more chance to get out the way!

Meh, I left them black. Looks far more menacing. If you're that worried about lighting, get some HIDs. ;)

I appreciate your input Si but what you must remember is that I didnt do them for you I did them for me. I like them and so does everyone who has seen them. (So Far). Unless of course unlike you they are all lying? But I dont think so.

And with the fact about it having a negative effect on the way the light is thrown. Who gives a shite? They look good and they were crap before so no harm is done.

 :smash:  :)

On a light car I'd agree with that, on a darker car I think it works the other way. It's all about the contrast giving definition to the shape, imo.

You menacing? Nah! not a chance.

Its not pick on Funky Si week. I just feel menacing Si.

Sorry guys - I completely forgot about putting up pics.

I can only find the attached pics as the rest is on a different PC. The "original" pic was taken before the stripdown and clean. You should have seen the crap that was caked on the inside of the glass and projector lens!

Cheers!

I'm not asking whether you or I like them...I am asking what on eath they are? ;)

Nice to see something a bit different :-)

Got a spare pair of headlights to do myself sometime. Yet another job on the list.......................

LOL. Robotic slugs. :)

They are things that you are supposed to put on the edge of your door to stop you bashing it on things. But I saw them and thought they will do for a little job in the future. when I was doing the Head lights I touched the paint and it smudged and looked bloody horrible. I didnt want to start all over again and sat for a while thinking what to do. BANG then it hit me. I can use the robotic slugs and hey presto. It would have looked even worse with just one so I positioned them to sort of go with the flow. If you know what I mean?

:duffer:

it was fun Phil. I enjoyed that job use a good heat gun and a sturdy knife to remover the galss. Dont remove the plastic bond stuff. When you put them back together just press the glass on and re-heat it around the edge and they will glue and seal again mate.
