Alex,

Please give me a call regarding the tensioner and the garage your car's at. 07044 016586 - Thanks!

Dan

EDIT: Ok - have spoken to you. Hope it went well.

serviced a tensioner oh dear!

in other words they put it in a vice and closed it to the correct gap :wack:

Or dribbled 3in1 all over it!

sealed with oil

rather than oil sealed :smash:

Lol that souds rather scary... in all my years in mechanics i've never heard of a serviceable tensioner. Probably got the wire brush out cleaned it up, coated it in wd40 and re-fitted. To be honest mate i'd tell them your taking else where to get it done properly and charge them for the job.

If they complain threaten to report the garage due to healt and safety issues. Wouldn't want to do too much mileage with a "serviced" tensioner.

If the belt breaks it's big money mate.

nb Always see a reputable dealer. Back street garages may offer a nice price but you only get what you pay for.

ok got my car back and on the plus side it is sounding and driving very nice.ok i spoke to the main mech there he said they replaced the cam belt, water pump, thermostatand 3 tensioner bearings oh and anti freeze thats what it says on the invoice also charged me for investigating noisethen it says replaced cambelt and un seize hydraulic tensioner and replace all pulleys as required and done timingwhich was out due to last belt not been fitted properly this cost me £603 he said he saved me about £400 oh and i havent paid for it yet

so was the car not running when you took it in or was it just running bad? what did the vehicle go in for? they shouldn't charge you for investigating unless you took it in as a problem and not as a routine replacement

the revs kept on goin upto 2k and down to 1k and there was a rattling sound around the front of the engine sounded like tappets on an old ford and the power wasnt too good

ahh that's why they charged you for it then. well at least it's sorted now though. at first sign of that serviced tensioner i would have been down there like a shot though and charged them for the price of seeing a main dealer

so do you think i should say more to them about the tensioner or do you think it would be ok the boss there is a nice guy and told me he wouldnt of done it if he thought it would be a risk the garage has a good rep they were second behind norris designs at the time attack they drive the lotus

companies only get a good rep if no one confronts them or complains when they make a mistake or do something wrong. I'd just bring it into conversation saying that your still uncomfortable with the fact that they have "serviced" a tensioner when they are sealed units. Ask them exactly what they did to the tensioner to service it if they say they took it apart it bull **** as they are sealed. If they start to give you info that sounds a bit far off then challenge the answer if they know what they are doing they will be able to explain exactly how they done it if it sounds like bull then tell them your not comfortable with it and you want it replaced. At the end of the day it's their fault and their problem so they will have to cover the cost. Most garages are insured for accidents from their mistakes but do you really want to run the risk of bend valves for the sake of a garage saying they "serviced" a tensioner?
