Pls bear with me on this one. "Old Git" here south wales. Maybe something for the purists amongst you??. As you can see I am the old fart of the club, my problem is I have a young man living next door to me who has an Audi S3. He claims it is puhing 277-280 BHP at the wheel, Unfortunately after a couple of beers he has challenged me to a run!!! I know that on public roads I could do him cos he doen1t look further than his bonnet. "Still with me???" But I won`t do it cos of obvious reasons. His car is very quick I`ve driven it. What I want to know is what can I do to a unmodified TT Auto for under a grand (which I was prepared to spend anyway) to give me a chance??? Pls help if you can I can fob him off for a while, he`s at Santa Ponsa this weekend. Thanks in anticipation ianj.

Just one other point, I have 19" wheels, will that slow me down?? If that is a stupid question I apologise,

Certainly doesnt slow me down

ok ready Ian. Sitting comfy? Less than a grand,,, easy

OK go to a welding supply shop and get some MIG tips that are 0.8mm diameter.

Induction cone.

Delimmit chip.

Boost guage.

£500 if that.

drop the MIG tips and get a boost controller and get it set up propery, that should cost you about a grand.

The art is getting teh revs up high enogh to launch properly, and for that I normaly get about 4K on teh spedo and then take my foot from teh brake.

TubZ Hi mate I thought you were literate!!! I said for under a grand. And you`ve seen for youself the opposition.

first off bud before pissing around like this is your autobox cooler up to it, if not forget the pissing comp as it may end in a broken box, if it is then my car is pushing 370bhp and it cost less than a grand, do not run boost jets of .8mm out of the can, try 1mm first of all should be 14psi( couple of quid), andy p will chip your ecu for around the 90 quid mark, apexi induction( 100 quid) , Boost gauge (50-100 quid), decatt( bag of worms here but 100-150 quid) and straight through exhaust( get centre silencer removed and fit sleeve pipes to make zorst a straight through sys( 40 quid).

Standard S3 is 265 bhp with a 0-62 time of 5.7sec. Very similar to the Z but the Z was 16-17 years ago. Depending on how well you car has been cared for it would be close.

Deve8UK mate your going to have to talk me thtrouhg this.

`/ I have a boost gauge

2

/ I understand the de limitter

I don`t know what the induction cone is.

I know what welding rods are. but I don`t know what you mean. Pls explain cos I am really interested.l

in case dave aint around i will stand in here for a mo

Induction cone is the type of air filter the apexi is which is by far one of the best for the Z

de limiter will be included in the chip if you do that, it removes the top speed limit of the car of 155mph, the benefit of the chip is that your ecu will see the raised boost you will get from using mig welding tips as boost jets( safe boost without chip is 12psi)

Less restriction in the exhaust will not only add power but make the chances of detonation less on tuned cars

OK on welding rigs they use gas flow tips. These are about 20P if that. They come in various diam. You push them in teh vaume lines either side of the engine, trust me 2 minute job.

Now most run 1mm but I have used .8 for about a year with no probs. Just means you get more Boost, therefore power but unlike a boost controller, you cant do anything about it and there have been incedences of boost spikes (can be bad) although i have never had one.

The exhaust is also a good idea, as is the autobox oil cooler.

But for a grand you would easy be able to get your car into the upper 4 second 0-60, and that as they said is "all she wrote"

Don't listen to people telling you to decat either mate. It's only worth doing if your thinking of replacing the turbos at the same time. I've seen too many people be caught out buy this one and not having the ££££s to put it right.

Thanks to all,got something to go on now.

Oh dear i can hear a my car is smoking and using loads of fuel thread coming LOL

"Don't listen to people telling you to decat either mate." I´ve seen that often enough myself ..de-catting the exhaust and then having turbo / seal problems ....but out of interest ,is it worth chipping the Z, adding a cone filter and leaving the stock exhaust system ..i.e do you notice a difference ?

Hi Maz, yeah the decat thing falls on deaf ears most of the time, I can't believe people still do it when they haven't got the money to put it right after its gone wrong.

Chipping a Zed is gonna make no difference in power as its only going to change the fueling. If you want more bhp you have to increase the boost using an electronic boost controller (14psi max on standard tubs) along with the chip ;)

hi im interested in doing this cheap mod, does it matter that my engine has no mods and what pipes do i have to put them in, pics would be good thanks

and does it matter how long the welding rigs are?

cheers

Nick

You will need to get the ecu remapped/chipped as well mate to cope with the fueling.

Hiya just thought id jump in on the band wagon here its my first post so ill say hi and welcome and ill say hi to the old git too im the young guy that has the audi s3 quattro im just wondering what this rod thing is all about cheers guys jeff...

If you are talking about the mig tips jeff then its basically a cheat in the wastegate pipeline which restricts the flow of air to the gate meaning that the car runs higher boost because it takes more boost to open the gate.

I think its the other way around mate. The mig tips release air from the signalling pipes at a small rate so it takes a higher boost in the system to operate the waste gates. Apologies if I'm mixed up but I'm pretty sure this is what happens.

I'd like to add a spanner in here! Mig welding tips are not a good way to up the boost on any car. I stuck a good explanation that I found in a thread recently about them. You will get the waste gates operating at different boost levels depending on how hot or cold (density of ) the air in the system is and how much is being released by the jets. You can get boost spikes and kill your tubs. A computer boost controller doesn't have this problem. People say they are using mig tips without any problems but they wouldn't know if they had problems until over time the pistons disintigrate from running lean, or the turbos fail from too high boost.

i agree to a point over "tips v controller" and i would recomend controllers every time to the owners who are not as clued up on whats going on down under but then there are long time petrol heads who like myself understand every aspect of these motors and ime now enjoying my 3rd zed in about 7-8 years and had tips in every one with no probs, allso 2 decatted with no smoke and just to piss you off even more 2 have been autos with no box issues :) . dont know i must be very lucky but i certanly dont sit with my foot on the brake pumping 4000 rpm before a fast standing start as this puts extreme pressure on the t/converter and valve bodies :(
