HEY GUYS! Ive been asked what Z I had when Ive come to service my car. I said I think its the Z32 he said thats a quad cam engine, needed to know for changing the cam belt.

Although on the engine it just says nissan 24v twin cam.

my car is a 91 Jspec 300zx non turbo SWB.

VG30DE engine model?

But is it two per banks as in quadcam ?

Sorry newbie trying to learn and get a cheap service.

Is £360 a lot for a cam belt change?

yes its a quad cam matey 4 cam shafts

Yes, think that's a VG30DE.

Four cams but two cam belts (I think?)

£360 sounds a bit pricy if it's just to change the belts. The 60,000 mile / 5 year service involves quite a bit more and a few of the expert garages change more too while they're in there (water pump I think and other bits).

The heads are twin cam, but being a V 6 it has four cams because it has 2 heads. One Cam belt.

Confused???

60K service is VV springs. Water pump, Thermostate, little rubber water pipes, Oil pump, engine oil, oil filter, Cam belt, pass belt, aircon belt and alternator belt.

P.S. I forgot Spark plugs and proberbly something else.

Yes it's a VG30DE - so please be careful. This engine (the NA) was never officially imported into UK so "official" garages wouldn't know about it. Only - as has already been suggested above - Z specialists will know it. For general servicing, maybe OK but for anything serious, Z specialist only.

to the best of my knowledge all of the 60k parts are the same as the TT with the exception of the spark plugs.

VG30DE is the engine, yes maybe I should goto a specialist, although the guy had looked it up and seems to know about it.

I didnt realise this engine wasnt issued in the UK.

I think Ryan / Baggins 300ZX specialist place isn't a million miles from you.

Not exactly flavour of the month on here but that wouldn't put me off - and miles better than a non specialist.

Poor guy!-first tell him to use a specialist, then say 'not flavour of the month'!!

Give Duffers a shout mate,he's mobile-might be a bit far tho'-but worth a go! :D

Duffers okay sounds good, I think I'll go with ryan unless anyone can tell me otherwise....

all humans bud, what i see in a chap, others see diffrent :x: in other words make your own mind up but stay clear of a guy who wants to change your belt and asks how many cams its got

thats exactly what i thought ring duff up he's spot on mate really knows his stuff!! not sure if he's soughted for transport yet though give him a call.

the Vg30de is it the same engine as used in the nissan maxima , if so it was a uk imported engine ............i used gregg and ryan many moons ago , it was ok for me

and have had no problems since , but i was never invoiced ( surprise ) so dont know what exactly was done , gregg is on here still and is a good bloke maybe he can advise something for you

you could try jap-tech in southampton, or southwest zed which are a little further afield.

Should change the tensioner really as well, i rang nissan for a friend the other day for a price

cam belt £51

Tensioner £250

couldnt beleive the tensioner price!

And as said, definately use someone that knows the z

Well my cam change was £200 for parts 1 belt, 2 bearings and a tensioner, and 3 hours labour. Most of the car was in pieces for the water pump to be changed so i thought 3 hours was excessive??

Mine was not at a zed specialist but they are good mechanics.

I have sourced all cam belt parts from Quinton Hazell and at a very fair price too........ :D I know they are not nissan parts but the are OEM spec, and quinton hazell supply to manufactures for new vehicles so they must be good...Anyway this is what i will be fitting to my car soon.

exactly LMAO

must be a right dumbass :wack:

expect to pay up to £500 max this should include

new timing belt

tensioner

waterpump

thermostat

x2 small hoses

new drive belt

coolant

check off cam oil seals and o-rings

check off idler bearings(always good to replace if there noisy)

ryan@ztech is ok with most customers, some have had a bad time same as anywhere, only differance your under the limelight on a forum!(i worked there for near on 18months and learnt alot) help some people out, but i dont have time to work on cars unless its worthwhile ie engine rebuild/turbo replacment.

if you dont mind travelling paul at SWZ on here is good :D

Hello mate

Bring it down to us at castle autos in north baddesley. Very familure with the VG30's NA's and TT's along with the JZA80 supras th RB skylines etc.

Best thing is to meet the people yourself and have a look at the cars they lookafter, and decide for yourself.

Give us a call and speak to Rob (owner) or myself Brian on 02380 740242.

At least we're local to you and youve lost nothing by coming to see us.

Whats the matter mate? Not had any lately?

If i was a trader and I wanted to trade on here, Then I would go through the relevant channels. But seeing as i'm not, why would I?

Not that it's any of your bussiness, But I work for the owner of the small ind est where "Castle Auto's" is situated.... The owner of which, happens to be the same family.

The Tel No given is the workshop, but i'm nearly allways no further than a minuite or so away going about my totally non-"car trade" related work.

As for not being suscribed..... I did'nt realise that it had now become obligatory.

Unless I have missed the point here, I thought that this was a virtual gathering of owners of the Z32 to meet other owners, ask advise, sort problems etc. So as an owner of one of these cars in the same area as another owner, I took it upon myself to enlighten him to the fact that there is a garage local to him, that can help him out with his current problem.

I now realise that I should have asked your permission first... I'm sorry.

Anyway, off to bed...... It is a school night afterall

Talk about how to drive people away!

The VG30DE non turbo"import only" and The VG30DETT twin turbo “import and UK” for arguments sake are almost the same engine from a servicing point of view. They both have 2 heads 4 cams and 1 big belt. Any mechanic who is used to the TT version will be at home working on the N/A. From experience just changing the belt would be a disaster waiting to happen. When removing an old belt, you will more than likely find wear/play on either/or the Cam belt Tensioner, Water Pump or the cam belt pulley’s. Even if the tensioner doesn’t crack when removing it will definitely be false economy if you do not fit a "NEW" one. I have seen these collapse and destroy engines. Don’t go the cheap route if you spend money on this car, spend it on doing this job properly.

As the cambelt change can be a major job, having the water pump, thermostat and Cam end seals replace is highly recommended. Duffer “Andy Duff” as with all good mechanics will advice you correctly. Don’t cut corners
