Is there much difference over the stock main beam?

I find with HID in the dipped lights I can't see much further when I switch to main beam and the light looks horribly yellow in comparison.

Presume it would be an improvement but a lot is down to the headlight design.

what do you need to do hid main beam?

Just a second HID kit with the correct bulb fitment :)

Wondering if you can actually see much further or if the headlight design is a restriction.

i would have thought you be able to see through trees with a hid main beam!... i just dont think many people do it as they have always been so expensive. now with the cheaper versions available im sure we will see alot more of it :)

Yeah DTA are doing kits for £99 and I've seen even cheaper on eBay but I'm sure the quality won't be so good.

I can remember when they were about £500 not long ago.

tell me about it... i bought mine from danny for 250 in the last group buy... 1 week later he revealed the 99 quid delivered kits :headvswal

if i would have waited i would have the dipped beams, main beams and 15 large doners kebabs for the same price!

Chris you need to do the earth wire jobby so your dip stays on when you switch to Hi. Then rather than spend £100 on a HID kit for main Beam. Nip down to Al Frauds and get a pair of the Ultra bulbs in the blue box. They are about £14 each, butthe light colour is as blue white as the HID (they are gas charged) and they are much more powerful than the PIAA's etc. I'll take a pic of mine and you'll see you canot tell the difference between the HID's and the Ultra Hi's.

I get flash for blinding people with my Dip beam and fry em with both on.

HID main beam is not recommended. The frequent on/off action of high beam severely shortens lifespan.

Hmmm I'd forgotten about that.

I'll do like Mark says and get some blue bulbs :)

Don't waste your money, just buy some night vision goggles (although you probably already have some for your doggin antics chris) ;)

Yes, but how often do you flash people?? Get a cheap kit, as you never really get any decent use out of your Main beam anyway! Unless you do a load of driving at 3 in the morning!! ;)

I Got Hid Main And Low I Paid 249 A While Back But Man I Can Assure You Its Worth The Cash!

Surely modern cars have HID main beam ?

Surely modern cars have HID main beam ?

That's a common misconception. Most new cars have HID dip beam and halogen main beam (this is the case with most Mercs/BMWs/Mazdas/etc, even Ferrari and Lamborghini tend to separate the two.

This is done primarily to save cost but also to avoid the HID kit from crashing from excessive "flashing" use.

In most cases, if dip beam has a HID kit fitted you'll never use main beam other than to flash.

I've noticed it takes a second or so for HID's to spark up too.

I'm sure this wouldn't work very well if you tried to flash someone

Maybe the best and cheapest option is to just get some bright colour matched standard bulbs.

Hi Chris,

You're right - HID bulbs take a second or so to ignite and gain maximum luminosity = no use when "flashing".

You won't find regular bulbs which are colour matched to a 6000K bulb simply because you can never get halogen to burn at that temp (even when Xenon gas has been added to the bulb).

At the moment the best bulb I do is a 4500K "ice blue" bulb. It is still a lot yellower than a 6000K HID bulb but at the same time considerably whiter than a standard halogen bulb. I've got these in stock if you're interested (£12/pair). They are standard wattage (ie 55W) so won't tax your wiring loom excessively.
